In simple terms. Void is Ice, because Fire, Lightning, and Ice make up the 3 elements of Magic. We use "Space Magic".
In complex terms. Void is "Space". Space is the complete absence of everything, which includes heat. Which leaves only cold, which is the absence of heat. Cold is nothingness. The Void is completely cold. Therefore Void fills the "Ice Element".

While that would be true, I believe it's more than that. It's a singularity in space, it's gravitational force collapsing upon itself.

if it'll make the ice subclass people shut up I'll buy anything you say

I don't think Void is supposed to be Ice. They obviously relied on the Warrior/Rogue/Mage archetypes from fantasy, but ditched ice in favor of something more sciencey and spacey.

Please read carefully. I tried to avoid Neil Degrasse Tyson ing it, but it's hard not to at this point.

No, I got what you were saying. That's a logical way to fit Void into the typical fantasy 3-element gig. I just don't really see Void that way. I don't think they worked through that same thought process, I think they just picked something else.

In the end it doesn't matter either way really. It kind of just ended up like that, because "Science".

Right right.
