Deconstructing Destiny // On Revival : Hypothesis

[ DISCLAIMER ] I am not a physicist. There's a reason we aren't going around shooting aliens and flying spaceships: it's not possible yet. This series is meant for entertainment only, and I have taken some literary freedoms where I deemed necessary. Content on this page is not final. I am open to civilised discussion, and am more than happy to correct my mistakes. I will also answer questions to the best of my knowledge. [ END OF DISCLAIMER ] * * * On Revival : Hypothesis Contrary to physics and astrophysics questions, there aren't many documents of real-world sources I can find to support any kind of claim regarding how revival works. As such, I will first establish the current gatherable knowledge about resurrection in Destiny, and then present some hypothesis to support that. 1. Principle of exclusivity We know from Ghost dialogue that each Ghost is exclusive to a Guardian. That is, from the moment it is created by the Traveler, a Ghost has one and only Guardian they must find. Likewise, no Guardian has more than one Ghost. 2. Principle of efficiency We have reasons to believe that Light is an essential fuel in the resurrection process. Guardian's whose Light is completely extinguished can no longer be revived. Similarly, if we assume Ghosts act as a conduit for this, if all Light is gone, resurrection is not possible. This leads us to two conclusions: a) Revival requires the channeling of Light. This is why Ghosts need to charge before being able to respawn (and is also why it takes longer in Darkness Zones). It's important to note that this channeling can be assisted by other Guardians, by donating their Light, even in Darkness Zones. As a side note, this also fits in with Warlock's ability "Fireborn", in which one is able to store this Light in the form of a Super and then release it all at once for revival assistance. b) Proximity to the Traveler is not as important as Light density is. This can be trivially inferred by observing Darkness Zones on Earth where revival is difficult, and Crucible arenas as distant as the Dreadnought (Saturn) where Guardians can resurrect effortlessly. 3. Principle of integrity There are no known cases of poorly resurrected Guardians, or any experience of trauma, dismemberment or genetic anomaly related to resurrection. I believe it is safe to assume that revival is a very robust process, one that may even be atomic in the sense that once activated, it always succeeds. These should be enough to make educated hypothesis regarding revival methods. I will add entries to this list should very pressing theories arise. And now, from least likely to most likely (and awesome): Hypothesis 1: Parallel Universe switcheroo Feasibility: D Awesomeness: B Efficiency: F We know parallel universes play a significant role in Destiny. For any given Universe, there are infinite perfect copies of it. This hypothesis suggests that it is possible to fetch a live copy of the dead Guardian from a different Universe and bring it back to the current one. The implications of this hypothesis are massive: for each death, one random Universe is left with one less Guardian - something that could get entire fireteams killed, and potentially doom our Solar System irreversibly. This would likely also break down a Guardian, mentally. No matter how strong you are, nothing can prepare you for being yanked from your reality, only to replace a dead version of yourself in another, putting yourself in great danger, and leaving your previous task at risk. However macabre, this hypothesis is included for completeness. Hypothesis 2: Vex timeframe-rearrangement technology Feasibility: A Awesomeness: C+ Efficiency: B For the Vex, time is not so much relative as it is mutable. An instant exists separately from physical space. We've seen it before: Vex bring back ancient Minds, and even Skolas was able to bring former - and formerly dead - House of Wolves bannermen through time back into our timeframe. It's possible that the Traveler gifted Ghosts with this kind of technology. This hypothesis suggests that when a Guardian dies, their Ghost is able to bring an older version of themselves back. This older version can be the Guardian from a few seconds before, right before he died. This would explain why Guardians' cooldowns and ammunition are unaltered as well. Hypothesis 3: Traveler's Ark, a genetic bank Feasibility: A+ Awesomeness: S Efficiency: A+ The fact that the Traveler created the Ghosts and that each Ghost assists only one Guardian suggest that the Traveler may have some a priori knowledge about any specific Guardian's abilities. More so, it is believed that prior to the City Age Guardians did not exist - and that may go for Guardian class abilities as well. Is it such a wild guess that these powers were genetically encoded in Guardians? What if the Traveler is really just a massive genetic bank? One that holds inside it thousands of millions of modified DNA and tissue samples, enough to fully re-encode a corpse into a living body? Suppose now that each Ghost keeps a copy of their Guardian's genetic code sequence, and is able to reconstruct them from nothing by rearranging elements in this precise, pre-defined structure. Revival becomes a surgical process in which damaged areas are restored, rather than full-body replacements. This preserves the cooldown and ammunition restrictions, as well as providing a basis for consciousness. That is, the Guardian can be aware that they died, everytime they die. Remarks Note that these assumptions are based on the principles described in the beginning of the post. If any of them breaks, additional theories may be needed to fill the gaps. I do not believe that, for example, a corrupted Ghost can mangle a Guardian's body on revival. If this is the case however, heavier restrictions must be imposed, namely regarding efficiency, Light consumption, proximity to the Traveler, etc., by analysing the corner cases where such situations happen. • Buahahaha So you think the reason that we are not flying around in spaceships shooting aliens in the face is because we can't "yet"? Since we have absolutely zero reason to believe aliens exist in the first place, I would think that is a good place to start, actually.

    • Interesting ideas...but you have one major problem. You are trying to assign scientific explanations to what is basically MAGIC. Whenever DeeJ or any of the devs talk about the game, they always refer to it as ***MYTHIC*** Science Fiction. Which is their way of describing a world in which magic and advanced technology exist side by side. Athough most of what your Guardians does is really magic, there is some scientific basis to it. 1. Revivals==Theory of Relativity. E=mc^2 is mathematics for Matter and Energy are two forms of the same fundamental reality..and are interchangeable. Take a certain amount of energy...and you can convert it to a set amount of Matter. Take a set amount of matter, and you can convert it into a set amount of energy. When your Ghost revives you, it basically takes the Traveller's Light ("energy") and converts it into Matter that is in the exact pattern of your Guardian. (Like the Transporter in Star Trek). 2. Light and Darkness are probably different aspects of the same Thing/Phenomenon/Force. Both seem to require a connection to Life in order to wield their magical effects. The Traveller through (assuming) the Ahmakara, The Fallen, and our Guardians. The Darkness through The Wyrms, The Hive, and The Taken. ..and the conflict seems to throw things out of balance wherever it takes root. (Which is why I think the surprise Bungie has for us in Year Ten is that its not in Humanity's interest for EITHER side to win...and that Light and Dark must be balanced, and not have one side win out over the other). This is suggested in some of the comments you hear NPCs who are not Guardians make. Both in the Tower and The Reef you hear NPCs talk about how they can FEEL the LIght of our Guardians as a physical **pressure**. The difference that people (at least the ones we hear from) in the City experience it as pleasant. While the Awoken in the Reef( themselves partially affected by the Darkness) experience it as uncomfortable. I also believe that because----at least as far as we know----Humanity is the only species that has been affected by both the Light (Guardians) and the Darkness (The Awoken)..

      • Gotta say you are assuming alot, especially when you qualify it with, "I'm not a physicist." 1. Principle of exclusivity would be one to one relation. There is nothing explicit saying a guardian could not borrow another guardians' ghost. And that one guardians' ghost cannot revive another guardian. The second part already exists in the game. The first one has yet to be explored. 2. Revival requires light: Is this true? When your guardian dies in story mode, is it the ghost that revives or the architects? Have you ever been killed by the architects? I have. Also, where do you see ghosts being charged? I have yet to see a gas station for my sparrow and an outlet for my ghost to be plugged into. 3. Light density: Density requires mass which then implies gravity. Light, in physics terms, can be quanta or waves, with a constance. Heard of E=MC squared? The C is the speed of Light. Now in this game light has a different interpretation. It can be compared to density. There is the fight with Sardon, in which jumping is difficult. Does that mean the darkness is heavier than the light? Or is it one of spiritual essence? 4. Principle of integrity should be renamed as resurrection. Don't be afraid to use the word for what it is. Now the developers are not going to sell us a game where you resurrect 40 percent of the time, and then as you level, the success rate grows. That would be bad decision making. The idea that there was not an evolutionary process involved just because it is not in the game doesn't make sense. There very well could have been. 5. Hypothesis 1- You cannot possibly force a theory from your Meta world view into other's. You are free to believe in infinite copies, of perfection and imperfection, but other people are free to believe in a finite number of them as well. 6. Vex technology- Interesting, however, how do you explain heavy ammo in the crucible? Also the technology of the Traveler could actually be the second Thought ship Quria sent itself to before being eaten by Auryx, or the Traveler could be none other than Taox! 7. Genetic bank- If you read the calcified fragment lore, you will see this fits more in line with the sword logic taught by the Worms to Aurash before becoming Auryx. Auryx dies many times and returns. The same for Xivu Arath and Savathun.

          • Interesting. I'd say a energy matter conversion of the 3rd one where light energies of the destiny universe are converted into a new body based on scans of the guardian. Consciousness would also have to somehow be linked to the light energies as well and able to so how be preserved and marked by the light energies. As to how this is done, it could either create a tear in space time by which the consciousness somehow is in a state of both existence and non existence. The other would be that the consciousness experienced a matter energy conversion and is able to remain dormant as light.

              • Great read! I'd like to think resurrection could be all three by how well written they were, but I'll go with a ghost containing a specific genetic code.

                  • Love this read! Very entertaining and thoughtful but I have a few small quarrels
1. Principle of exclusivity
This is one point I'll disagree with on the part that Ghost were made exclusively for one person, I belive they are bound to the Guardian ONCE the physically revive them and connect with them, otherwise they can go to multiple subject till they find the right one. (During one of the new missions in TTK, the one containing Cayde's Stash, the Ghost tells us at the end of the level that there was a man that he could revive but would not because the man 'had enough of war' so that's what I was setting my basis on)
3. Principle of integrity Hypothesis 1: Parallel Universe switcheroo
Don't really agree with those one cause as it stands no one on a Guardian level can control time or has a serious distortion on space (besides blowing s*** up) the only beings that are capable of doing something like this are the Vex (but they seem to gather their troops from past/future than different realities) and possibly the Exo Stranger (though not confirmed)
Hypothesis 2: Vex timeframe-rearrangement technology
This again goes back to how the Vex use their tech, they seem to pull it from the past/future and while it would be interesting that Ghosts could do that, I find it very unlikely as Guardians know how they die and even during the time they are down (as seen in Death Cams and sitting waiting for revive)
Hypothesis 3: Traveler's Ark, a genetic bank
I like this one but it seems also strange. Ghosts pick up Guardians based on their Light and how they can control(that's why everyone isn't being revived on spot) if the Traveler could genetically modify people then why not to everyone (unless only certain people are compatible or be safely changed without fear of damage). The subclasses seemed to be on how the Guardians want to use it (seeing as the first Golden Gun was shot by Shin Malhur against Dredgen Yor despite him not knowing how before) so it varies from Guardian to Guardian, though there is a set standard so everyone can use their powers in some form or fashion. Also as a side note: Since Light is required, could there be such thing as a Corrupted Ghost/Guardian combo?

                          • Finally a speculation thread that's grounded in logic and fuels further debate. In my mind it's a case the light is some kind of fule source much like either is to the fallen. But I body's are modified to build and grow this like walking solar batteries. The ghost about to resecurct is could be simply case of matter reprogramming. Build body...insert light... how are minds are transferred though is beyond anything I can speculate. It's either the ghost reprinting the brain. Or a gurdains light is littlary his soul memory's thought and all.
