I had a feeling you misunderstood that part. If you also notice it was a CUL-DE-SAC. As in, if they had no where else to forward the obvious move would be to make a u turn (its a cul-de-sac) so of course they were turning back. Its not like a list of choices were avaliable and they decided "hey lets slam head-on to these guys following us" .
