Fireteam Ashen(7): Whispers
Looking for a different chapter? Here's the Master Post.
The fireteam approached the Fallen machine. "Hmm.. Let's see what the Fallen were up to. Barry, take a look." Avesk's Ghost appeared and began to scan the alien tech. The blue painted Ghost spoke up: "The Fallen are trying to access these machines, but something is fighting back. This will take some time." "You got it." Avesk replied. Validus' Ghost spoke in his mind. 'His Ghost has a name. Why don't I have a name?' 'You want a name?' Validus asked, 'Okay, how about...Twinklebot.' 'How about, no.' A large growl sounded from several doorways and large groups of Fallen began to advance on the team. 'We'll discuss this later, Ghost.' Validus said as he readied his rifle. "Form up on me." Avesk commanded. "Focus fire on the Captains and duck out if you're taking too much fire." Validus and Cosmo nodded. They backed up against the wall and fired their weapons. Human ammunition and Fallen bolts of energy traded places in the air and they flew across the room in a thunderous battle. Avesk tossed a grenade. It landed a short distance from a group of Fallen. It crackled as it hit the ground and then sent a bolt of electricity to three separate Fallen, fusing their armor into crisp chunks as they fell. When most of the Fallen in the room had been eliminated, the few remaining Dregs screeched a cry for help. More Fallen rushed into the room to aid their brethren. Accompanying them were a few large, floating purple spheres, resembling giant eyeballs. The spheres hummed and chattered in incomprehensible robotic sounds as they they rotated, firing large blobs of purple energy. "I'll focus on the Servitors. You guys shoot everything else." Avesk said over the sounds of battle. Under relentless fire from Avesk, one of the Servitors cracked and eventually exploded with a metallic scream. The remaining Fallen and Servitors renewed their efforts to push back the Guardians, but to no avail. The Guardians advanced, firing into the mass of Fallen, taking more and more out of the fight. When the last Servitors were destroyed, the remaining Fallen began to panic and run back from the way they came. Cosmo started to follow after him, but Avesk laid a hand on his shoulder. "I think there's been enough death today. You of all people should agree." Cosmo's nodded and lowered his weapon. Avesk's Ghost spoke over the silence. "Okay. I've pulled out everything they managed to steal." The Ghost exposed the core of the machine before he disengaged and floated away from the Fallen tap. "We should destroy this thing." He said as he disappeared. "I've got this." Validus said. He reared back and rammed his fist into the core. His fist punctured metal and he pulled out a large fistful of wires. "Done." Avesk's Ghost, Barry, spoke up when Validus was finished. "They didn't get much. Kept hitting an active firewall. Old Earth, Russian. But that means..." Avesk finished the thought. "The legends are true. A Warmind did survive the Collapse. Rasputin... an AI built to defend Earth. He faced The Darkness and survived. And he's protecting something here in the Cosmodrome. We need to tell the Vanguard. We have to find a way to reach him." The team stepped out of the parking garage to be greeted by sunlight. It came down through the clouds to bathe the three battle-worn warriors in its warmth. "Avesk," Validus asked, "How were you able to bring Cosmo back?" Avesk pondered the question a moment before answering. "When you first woke up, you were actually brought back to life by your Ghost. Your Ghost can revive you every time you die, but sometimes, when the presence of the Darkness is smothering, your Ghost will need the Light of another Guardian to quickly resurrect you. That's what I did with Cosmo earlier. You are both going to die in this war. A lot. But this is why we are a team. So we can watch each other's back and help each other out. It's what a good fireteam does." With a boom, Avesk's ship flew down from orbit and hovered above the team. They broke into bits of data and streamed up towards the ship. A moment later, the ship flew off in the direction of the City. As it did, a single security camera, resting on a bit of stable wall from the fueling station panned as it watched the ship depart. A few Russian words quietly poured from the camera's speaker, as if it was mumbling to itself. Then it turned and went back to observing the scenery and the Fallen.
Click here for the next chapter
