I'd get that gun mod, but it just takes up too much room. Don't think I want to spend half my available mod space on just guns.

I'm pretty sure the mod shrinks in size once it's downloaded. I believe in the load order it shows how much it's actually using. I'm not 100% positive but I know once of my other mods was huge but ended up shrinking in size.
