The 1st Diablo was and wasn't online. You had to connect to battlenet's servers to play but the save files were on your computer. You could use a hex editor to adjust your stats, weapons, quests. ....you could even give yourself gear. The best was 1 of the early quests gave you a stat point. I only ever used the hex editor to uncheck it's completion and keep getting free stat points.
