I beg to differ. They're works of art. True Japanese katanas are beautiful. The is light for quick movements, and the blade is curved for a slicing action on every strike. Japanese steel is the best in the world. Finally, katanas are made for stealth attacks. Oh, I don't mean the eBay katanas. I mean the katanas made in Japan in batches of 100 or less. They start at about $4,000 dollars.
I'm not a weeaboo
• Traditional japanese Katanas are inferior because Japan is a country without great ressources. The metal they used is inferior to European. The japanese also started crafting swords 500 years after Europeans. The blade being curved doesn't have to do with anything, it's simply either a by-product of folding the metal or a design choice. The blade is too thin to actually compete in long term fights. A Katana is quite fragile. And they were not meant as stealthweapons! A Katana is a, mostly, two-handed weapon and the long blade hinders you in close spaces. It was a sword used by Samurai and Samurai only, and then again mostly in battles. This comes from someone who's training Haidong Gumdo (Korean Kendo) for three years now.

Wonderful. I trained in Tae Kwon Do for seven years now. Do I flaunt that around? No. Nobody really cares that you have trained for three years. The katana was used by ninjas and the samurai.

  • Incorrect. Ninja primarily used the ninja-to/chokuto. Short, straight blade made of cheaper, less refined metal. Designed for utility and disposability.

  • There actually is no physical and historical evidence of the ninjato. The first time an example of it appeared was shortly before a japanese play hit the theaters in the sixties

  • There are old documents and techniques that show a heavy emphasis on short-blade technique, though. So Chokuto/Ninjato style blades.

  • Ninjas were farmers that didn't have any access or training with swords. Haidong Gumdo is the Korean Way of the Sword, trained by the Korean knights the Samurang who, surprise surprise, used Katanas. So I actually contribute validation to my points. If it'd be about the best self-defense martial art and you would participate in the debate you'd state that you're training Tae Kwan Do to make people realize you know what you're talking about.
