So, Dark Souls III is actually very linear. You might get lost at some parts, but that's mostly because they hide the entrances to things. (took me forever to figure out how to get into the Cathedral of the Deep!) So far, though, the game's only had 2 big branch off paths that I've seen, and both of them seem to be required. That being said, you do still need to explore yourself. There's not some handy-dandy magic compass to point you where to go, or journal to list your objectives. Where you go first, and how you find the entrance is all up to you. It can be disheartening to lose all your souls, but that's why you get up, and try again! To get better, so you won't lose any more! As for PvP, and jolly cooperation? Pretty straightforward. You can summon up to 2 (3 with Knuckle) friendly phantoms to assist you. This will increase enemy health, though, so ne cautious. Once you defeat the boss in your area they are returned to their world. If you want to play the whole game with someone, you're gonna be playing each area twice! However, Dark Spirits can also invade you. Hopefully the invader is honorable, but that's not often the case. In certain areas you're more likely to be invaded, due to covenants, or PvP popularity. If you use the Knuckle, two invaders can invade at once! You can also summon invaders as well. This will result in a more honorable duel most of the time, but not always. For both summoning & invasions you must be Kindled, by using an Ember. I'd definitely recommend the game myself! Feel free to ask away for any questions you have!

 • Summoning a red phantom does not require you to be Embered.

 • I haven't gotten the game yet, and so far I've only played bloodborne. In bloodborne, a enemy appears that rings a bell called the sinister bell. This begins a search for other players seeking to invade in the same location. If you kill the bell lady fast enough, it cancels the sinister bell and no one can invade. Is there a similar function in ds3? Or is the invasion of other players a constant definite mechanic you can't "opt" out of during jolly cooperation? I play with my bro, and sometimes we just kill the bell lady really fast because we just want to co op and have our setup for co op rather than pvp for example. So I see us playing ds3 in a similar fashion if it's possible.

 • Nope. So long as you're kindled you can be invaded.

 • That sucks. We might pass on that game then. It's annoying having to deal with that when you just want to co op.

 • It can be, but it's not as annoying as it sounds, at least not for me.

 • I don't mind it that much, but my bro does. It's literally ruined his entire night before. When you're busy with life working and shit, and all you want to do is co op with a friend or bro, last thing you want is spending an hour playing together only to have someone come in and ruin it. It's only fun when we game together, that's how we played bloodborne. I guess we'll prob just pass on it. That dude will end up breaking something.

 • Well, if it changes anything I haven't been invaded once yet. I haven't kindled myself very often, though.

 • Well basically, doing co op invites invaders to invade right? And it remains a constant possibility right? That's how you made it seem at first unless I misinterpreted. I mean the main thing is that when you got an hour to play a game that can be played co op, it can overwhelmingly enrage you to spend almost that whole hour up and die at the end cause someone invaded you during a mob of enemies and killed you. Like sure....you can go back and all...but when you gotta work, go to school, I mean....next time means days or even a whole week. Then the same risk is present anyways. He doesn't know this yet so I'm almost 100 percent positive it will discourage the purchase. Sucks. Looks like a dope ass game. He liked how it looked too, and that was the first thing he worried about. Lol

 • Well, not coop specifically, but being kindled in general. It'll increase your health by 30%, and allow online play. Whether or not coop is actually activated, invaders can come. And don't worry, I understand. I can usually only play for 2 days before needing to take a 5 day break, due to work.

 • You can avoid invasions by setting passwords and just going through the play through with one another. Invasions do not tend to happen often when just playing with people, except for one area of the game that is more active than others. Don't miss out on this beautiful game.

 • That really works? I know in bloodborne it doesn't. Passwords help co op link, but do not block invasions. I like how bloodborne did it, because you could search for the bell maiden. Kinda rewarding, and made invasions worth putting up with since you knew at the very least you could prevent them. It does look beautiful, and I really got interested due to that new mechanic. Idk what it's called. Focus? That mana looking bar that lets you do like special attacks or stances with weapons or combos of weapons.

 • Yea what I've seen has been awesome. If I buy the game for my bro maybe he won't mind the invasions as much lol. I meant to check it out earlier, but damn. I drove across the states 2 weeks ago and I'm about to drive back again. Life is such a trip sometimes.

 • No, but it seems to power the sense of dread when you have a friend. And it seems that it does make an impact. I rarely got invaded by people with my password on, and it became much more active once I took it off.

The only things that effects random invasions are the dried finger and the number of phantoms you have

 • I actualy see the linear design if the game as a negative, I wish they went back to the open world design of DaS. But that being said it does have a lot of hidden areas that really need some exploring to find, and I like that.

 • Well, I'm happy to hear that DS3 is a little more linear :P Having so many paths with so little guidance and so much risk is not a challenge I'm eager to take on... And I guess I shouldn't be so upset if I lose my souls... There's no time limit. I need to think about why I feel that way...

 • Yeah, Dark Souls 3 is much more linear. They start you out on one area, with one path foward but tons of different paths that have loot, shortcuts, and other stuff like that. Eventually, you'll get to points like the other guy said where you can go in two different directions, but there is almost never a wrong way to go and you can start warping from very early in the game.

 • Keep in mind, I'm still on my first runthrough, so I might've missed optional paths you might see. But yeah, the only game whereit was super frustrating to lose souls was Dark Souls II because enemies despawned after you killed them enough, so souls, though plentiful, felt very limited.. That being said. It's still pretty frustrating. :p

 • The Dried Knuckle is an item that allows for a 3rd phantom & 2nd invader.
