There is a super massive black hole at the center, yes, but due to how big they are the tidal forces would be a lot smaller at the event horizon than say a regular black hole. This means that while normal black holes are horrible at actually eating things, super massive black holes are even worse. The threat of Sag A (milky way's SMBH) is realistically non-existent due to how bad these black holes are at eating.
