I build my own guitars from kits, I have a Les Paul style with a spalted maple top finished in a black burst, an SA Ibanez style guitar with a flame maple top finished in transparent green and a dragon inlay fretboard, and I am waiting on parts to build an Explorer shaped guitar which I am gonna do in a metallic gun metal grey. I am playing through an old behringer gmx210 amp at the moment but just ordered a Marshall half stack that will hopefully be here in a week or so.

  • I've looked into that as well, found a few places that sold quality kits, but didn't dare to buy them, since I know I'll screw up, might try it in the future tho

  • Yeah, my best advice is get a cheap kit first because you will learn a lot from the first one you do and if you wreck it it's not a big loss.

Well the first thing to do is find somewhere to source kits (I know a place in Australia). These kits are usually made in the same factories that pump out guitar bodies for ibanez etc. Now the big difference between a $500 guitar and a $2000 guitar is time and hardware. I have a background in woodwork and antique restoration so I have the ability to build a $300 kit and have the final product play like high end expensive guitars. The most important thing is to make sure the neck is attached in the exact right position and after that giving the frets a very precise level and dress. Due to my past I have the knowledge to put gorgeous finishes on them but with a few exceptions that doesn't really have an effect on playability. All that said I'm not special and anyone can assemble these kits, I have some specific tools which make the final product very good but time is the most important thing. If you slap one together in a hurry you'll end up with nothing more than a pretty wall decoration, but if you take your time to do it right you can produce a great guitar.
