Questions of Morality

1. Someone spends a week working and gets his paycheck. If there were absolutely no consequences and nobody would ever know you stole it, would you? 2. Some guy is in a relationship with the girl you really like. Their relationship is a very happy one, for both of them. If you were able to, and nobody would ever knew you did it, would you ruin their relationship and take her for yourself? (In this hypothetical situation, she would go to you if her relationship with him were to end. Also, just switch those genders around if you're a girl or gay.) 3. Someone you don't know spends a week playing a game that you also play, and he gets the best weapon or armor in the game. If you had the opportunity to steal it, would you? 4. Someone spends an entire day working on a personal project, such as piecing together a large Lego set. If nobody would ever know you did it, would you destroy it just for the fun of it? 5. Someone finds something that any other person would consider unimportant, but he has taken a liking to it. For example, a pinecone. He found it and now keeps it in his room because he likes it. Would you take it and throw it away for the fun of it? ___________________________________________ All I ask is a simple yes or no, but feel free to give a more detailed answer if you would like.

    • 1. Based solely on that information, no. 2. Absolutely not. I'd rather see someone I love happy. 3. Probably. Especially if theft was a gameplay mechanic. I don't consider in-game items property, and most game companies would agree. It's not their problem if they delete all your in-game shit. 4. Nah, I definitely wouldn't be a dick for no reason. 5. ^

    • No for all of them, though I want to draw some extra attention to #2. If the guy isn't being abusive or disloyal and she's happy, I'm not going to ruin the relationship. Ensuring that the person you love is leading a happy life should come first, as opposed to ensuring they are in a relationship with you.

    • I'd only do the second one, as messed up as it is. The LEGO one is really -blam!-ed up to do, I would know.

      1. No 2. My husband had a gf at the time when I told him I like him so I guess I have done it. They weren't happy though, after I told him that I liked it gave him what he needed to leave that relationship. I would never do that to someone that was happy though. 3. No, I like earning my things in games 4. No 5. Coming from a person that collects rocks and fortunes from fortune cookies, no.

      •
1. Someone spends a week working and gets his paycheck. If there were absolutely no consequences and nobody would ever know you stole it, would you?
Depends on the person. Couldn't steal from an individual supporting their families or trying to get their life together. If it belonged to some manager with a healthy coke habit and the tendency to put you on double shifts for a month straight then I'd be tempted.
2. Some guy is in a relationship with the girl you really like. Their relationship is a very happy one, for both of them. If you were able to, and nobody would ever knew you did it, would you ruin their relationship and take her for yourself? (In this hypothetical situation, she would go to you if her relationship with him were to end. Also, just switch those genders around if you're a girl or gay.)
No. I'm a toxic individual by nature and if I truly did care for their well being, I'd stay as far away from them as possible.
3. Someone you don't know spends a week playing a game that you also play, and he gets the best weapon or armor in the game. If you had the opportunity to steal it, would you?
I would hold it hostage for twenty bucks.
4. Someone spends an entire day working on a personal project, such as piecing together a large Lego set. If nobody would ever know you did it, would you destroy it just for the fun of it?
I've killed men for lesser crimes.
5. Someone finds something that any other person would consider unimportant, but he has taken a liking to it. For example, a pinecone. He found it and now keeps it in his room because he likes it. Would you take it and throw it away for the fun of it?
Certainly not for fun, but if it grew into a hoarding problem I'd definitely take steps toward an intervention.

      • 1. "Absolutely no consequences"= hell yeah! 2. Well if the guy was my friend, then no, but if not, then yes. 3. Yes. 4. Yes I would, but I may leave like $50 under the wreckage... 5. No, see no point. Destroying something is better.

          • I don't see how the first one has no consequences, because the person will be down on money. But anyway, I said no to everything.

          • 1. Under most circumstances, no. Not my money, or my place to take it. However, if I were in a situation of dire need, and no alternate sources of immediate revenue were available, then i'd consider it. 2. Not a chance, I would never deliberately corrupt genuine love for my own personal gain. I'd keep an eye out for someone else, and just be happy that they found happiness in each other. 3. It's just a game. If he earned it, it's his, and likewise I could earn it if I put in the time. That being said, if I want it that badly, I will. There are times where morals can be reasonably compromised, but not over something that trivial. 4. If it's a project they deeply cared for, I wouldn't touch it. I generally don't enjoy having my work messed with, so I won't mess with another person's without good reason. 5. If it's important to him, i'll leave it be. There are little things of mine that I enjoy and wouldn't really like to lose, so I wouldn't take something like that away from someone else.

          • I relate to #5. People on here have talked about destroying or throwing away Fawnzy. She is inanimate. She wouldn't care but I would. People have told me they would destroy something I love just because they think it's wrong to love it. For no reason but personal satisfaction they would destroy possessions of another person whose opinions they did not share. I could never do that to someone. If I am made to feel uncomfortable by someone's actions or opinions I avoid situations where I'm in contact with them or grin and bare it. I don't attack them in an attempt to change their actions or opinions. TL;DR - just cause someone makes you cringe doesn't give you free reign to bully them. Try being nice.

          • 1. Is that even possible these days? Whatever happened to direct deposit? Anyway, no. Never been that hard up for cash. 2. Obviously this is all hypothetical, but the question implies a weird lack of agency on her part. Anyway, no, I don't think I've ever been that desperate. 3. I've never been that into any game I've ever played. No. 4. No, that's psychotic. 5. No.

            •
1. Someone spends a week working and gets his paycheck. If there were absolutely no consequences and nobody would ever know you stole it, would you?
Depends on the situation. If there were no way to return the money, then yes I would keep it. I don't really care about honor or nobility, it's just that I have my own money, and chances are the person whose paycheck that is doesn't understand how to make the money I can make. I don't need a paycheck, which is probably a relatively small amount of money, in order to make money. If I don't need it to make money, and I don't need it to be successful, then there is no reason for it to exist in my life.
I dislike this wording. I don't lust over females, it's a useless tirade. I also don't believe in relationships that don't end in marriage. If it's sex I want, no, I wouldn't end the relationship because it'd be easier to just have her cheat on him. If it's her hand in marriage I want, then that's for the reason that that current relationship isn't going to end in marriage, therefor there is no wrong doing in courting her.
3. Someone you don't know spends a week playing a game that you also play, and he gets the best weapon or armor in the game. If you had the opportunity to steal it, would you?
I don't play video games anymore. So no.
4. Someone spends an entire day working on a personal project, such as piecing together a large Lego set. If nobody would ever know you did it, would you destroy it just for the fun of it?
Lego sets are temporary works. If I don't destroy it, the universe eventually will. That being said, due to how little Legos actually matter, I wouldn't have a problem with destroying it, but I don't think I'd exactly find it fun to do because it seems like a pointless, waste of time.
5. Someone finds something that any other person would consider unimportant, but he has taken a liking to it. For example, a pinecone. He found it and now keeps it in his room because he likes it. Would you take it and throw it away for the fun of it?
Same reaction as #4. I don't have a problem with throwing it away, but I don't foresee me actually doing it because there's no use in doing it.
