• It is a great part of a great movie. Unfortunately, it buys into Roman propaganda. It was a slip up, owing to the fact that Life of Brian concentrated so much on lampooning religion, and quite rightly so. Archaeological evidence suggests that just about everything the Romans brought to Britain, was already in Britain. Do you really think that if they had such a much better way of doing things, that the Germans and Picts would have resisted them?

 •
Archaeological evidence suggests that just about everything the Romans brought to Britain, was already in Britain.
that seems like a lie, but OK.
Do you really think that if they had such a much better way of doing things, that the Germans and Picts would have resisted them?
roman tactics were not effective in the German and pict territories, that and poor leadership are the only reasons why the Romans didn't conquest them. Picts weren't even worth the trouble.

 • They were not as technologically advanced as the Romans. But Pre-Roman Britain still had law, civilisation, and even metalled roads. They had such things for thousands of years before the Romans. Stonehenge could not have been built without civilisation. Skara Brae, again conclusive evidence of civilisation, long before Romans. There are even planned towns, and metalled roads. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2011/mar/15/britannia-roman-roads-iron-age http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-14555449 Romans often take credit for being a civilising force. But only because they wrote history that way. They're not the first or last to slander their enemies, and big themselves up. As for their tactics against the Germans and Picts. It's totally irrelevant, they still met stern resistance, to what the Picts and Germans obviously considered subjugation, not civilisation. As for the Picts not being worth it, evidence of 260 Roman camps in Scotland, and the Antonine Wall suggest the Romans would beg to differ. They tried to take Caledonia with a larger force than they used to garrison the rest of the island.
