It's a mature topic that many people on this forum cannot talk seriously. There are many people around that age where gay bashing is seen as "cool", especially if they're in a middle class or upper class upbringing, which I assume the vast majority of the people in this forum fit those two requirements. So, it's mainly because of immaturity, and the lack of understanding that it's downvoted. While it's true that LGBT people in America are still discriminated against, the media, and the conservatives are trying to paint it like everything is "equal" and "fair", which, it seems that at least over 60% of the Offtopic identify as conservative, so the downvotes to try and hide the "big bad idea" is probably the main reason.
