Last time I checked, pretty much everywhere but America believed homosexuality was a sin and dealt extreme punishment to those that followed that sin. Be grateful for what you have and not for what you want.

  • No, actually most of the world is pretty okay with it aside from Africa, the middle east, Russia, and most of Asia that isn't Japan.

And you do realize that generalizing the world's culture based off 2 countries, one which is a dictatorship, is like trying to base the US's thought processes off of North Korea's actions. Talking by countries not population obviously.

  • Still, those Billions of people are discouraged against homosexuality and the other freedoms Americans have. The entire point of the original text was just to say that America and its citizens have it better than other countries and their citizens and we should spend our time cherishing our new freedoms instead of asking for more.

Sounds great in theory. However by that same line of reasoning, no one should ever strive to better themselves, their lives, or how they are accepted in society because someone will always have it worse than you do. And that's just silly.

Sure it does. First thing we teach children is to appreciate what they have because others have it worse. "Eat your green beans, there's people starving in Africa!" It just doesn't apply to everything.

It just doesn't apply to everything.
The way he worded it applied it to rights. Nothing about that sounds good. He worded it specifically to apply "appreciate what you have" to this one situation. Yes, "appreciate what you have" is good. "Appreciate the rights you have because others have it worse" is (almost) never "good in theory". If a (common sense) group of people arguably has insufficient rights here, I don't care how badly the rest of the world treats them; their rights should be discussed/fought for. Period.

  • Even if homosexuals get complete equality, most of the world won't respect them completely. You can't expect thousands of years of brainwash to just wash off when a law says you have to respect these people and treat them like average people.

She is simply saying that people in the LGTB community aren't treated equally yet which is why the fight for equality continues.

  • You're right, but because people don't fully accept lgbtq, these changes are going to require a lot of effort. What I don't like about the post is that she's trying to rush these efforts instead of gradually allowing them to come naturally. A lot of people want these changes so it's inevitable that people are going to acknowledge the rights these people want, but the government has to make sure the general populace are okay with these changes so that anarchy doesn't happen. It may seem far fetched, but people are crazy and don't take to change so well.

They're living a life where they're treated like sub-humans for being who they are. Of course they want that shit to end quickly. Who wouldn't..? If white males were hated by society throughout their life, I'd want that to end quickly too.

We're saying the same thing breh. The context he said it in is specifically what I was saying was silly.

  •
We're saying the same thing breh. The context he said it in is specifically what I was saying was silly.
At best you're taking the final words of his quote out of context. I was saying his overall quote is not good in theory. When most of his post is about how OP should appreciate the rights she has, and then this guy summarizes his post to say "appreciate what you have", I disagree with you that it makes sense to just say those four words sound good in theory when this sub thread's author was (seemingly) never being general. It's not you I'm looking to argue with though. I merely made my post to show I more than partially agree with that OP; I think he's entirely wrong (given the whole context/content of his post).
