I think Hello did a great job explaining what a "Furry" is, I'd like to elaborate on it a bit further:
The term “Furry” began being used heavily around 1983 and was for the most part a fandom exclusive slang word defined by one of two ways: 1) to easily describe an anthropomorphic animal character, which is to say a character that exhibits human-like intelligence and emotional states. Often times these characters are depicted as bipeds (two-legged) rather than quadrupeds (four-legged); 2) a way to describe the fans of this particular anthropomorphic art style. This can range from art enthusiasts, to artists, to costumers, to musicians, all the way to those exploring spiritual aspects of the soul (spirit animals) not unlike Native Americans. The fandom uses the latter definition to describe themselves in a similar fashion as Star Trek fans identifying as “Trekies”.
