That time someone I knew got sent to jail

>be me >First year HS >first class, geography >random girl sits beside me >start talking bout random shit >We start hanging out >She seemed really nice >Fast forward to second year >I rarely see her now >Where ever she goes people always ask her questions >She usually stayed home >I thought it was odd behaviour >Spot her in alleyway >She's taking someone's money >She hands them a case of some sort >Assume she's a drug dealer now >Never confirmed >Leave scene and never tell anyone >Fast forward a year later >From what I've heard, she's been rather well off >Whatever she's handing out, it's been keeping people happy >Also hear that she got arrested >Couldn't believe it >She was caught taking something that wasn't hers >trying to figure out what it could've been >She was so kind, why would she steal? >She was never one to think of taking someone's car >that just wasn't her >She couldn't have stolen a handbag >She had her credit card stolen in grade 9 >Knows how stressful that can be >wouldn't put someone else through it >She couldn't steal something large like a TV. >She didn't like heavy lifting >It'd be impossible to sneak a tv out of a wallmart >Blockbuster was closed down >And with everything going digital >She couldn't have possibly stolen movies from the stores >She didn't even own a DVD player. >Fast forward to current time >Day of her trial >I'm there in the crowd >She's sentenced to 5 years in prison >In shock >After the trial I see a cop standing by >Go over to the cop >Ask him what she could've possibly stolen that got her in prison for 5 years >"It seems sort of harsh, doesn't it?" >cop looks at me and begins speaking >"she was arrested for getting stuff off the Internet and distributing it" >Question this statement >"How was she stealing" >cop looks at me angrily >NowI-blam!-edUp.jpg >"Listen here kiddo", cop begins ranting >"Downloading pirated films is stealing" >"Stealing, is against the law" >PIRACY. ITS A CRIME

That cop fails to understand what the law is. Downloading pirated films is not illegal. That would be like being charge someone for theft when the bought a stolen car from a used car dealer. Disseminating copyright material you do not have the rights to IS illegal. Which would be uploading stolen movies or giving them out on the street. Selling them is worse because it basically is stealing since you do not own the rights to that movie, nor helped create it, yet are taking all the profits.
