Phil Spencer Announces Possibility of Xbox One Hardware Upgrades

During his Xbox Spring Showcase event keynote last week, Microsoft's head of Xbox Phil Spencer talked about future of "hardware innovation" for the console, similar to the ways PCs evolve. In a speech to reporters, he said that the Xbox One could see a future in which it is upgraded, rather than replaced by new consoles. Spencer was talking about how Microsoft has sought to align its Windows 10 and Xbox One development activities under the internal "Universal Windows Platform" while offering backwards compatibility for many Xbox 360 games, now playable on Xbox One. He was addressing the concerns of some Xbox One owners that the exclusives destined for that console are appearing on PC, thus eroding the value of owning a console.

    • I doubt xbone will ever have upgradeable hardware. However i do think microsoft will come out with their own line of xbox gaming pcs that are fully customizable or you can get base models (I predict 6 models, each at various prices, up to 2000 dollars).

        • Phil's brain is in the right place but I don't think it will happen. Mobile hardware upgrades so quickly it's possible an iPad or set-top box will rival the power of the Xbox One by the end of the Xbox One's lifespan. However, I've heard this talk of upgradeable consoles before. Nintendo and Sega even tried this with add-on cartridges. Having different hardware during the life of a console fragments the market, and big budget AAA games depend on a larger market. The only way this could really work is by treating the console like a PC and having games run like PC games. In other words, Phil is talking about Xbox as a software platform and not a hardware platform.

        • They should just scrap the console and make Xbox a software & social marketplace suite for PC instead (Steam with a different name essentially). Things like avatars & so on would make the Xbox a much more enjoyable & immersive platform in comparison to steam & so on.

        • If anything it just means that the next xbox will have a proprietary external GPU attachment much like the proprietary HDD found on the xbox 360. At some point during the console generation they'll release a "stop-gap" upgrade to not only extend the duration of the console generation, but also to prevent what happened with this generation of consoles. By all means the PS4 and Xbone are both stop-gap consoles. From a business perspective it makes more sense to instead create a stop gap upgrade rather than a stop gap console. If they can release a simple upgrade instead of releasing an entire new system it will save them a lot of money because they won't have to sell it at a loss. As long as the base platform has a decent amount of longevity, a simple GPU upgrade 5 or so years into a console generation will extend the life of the console by quite a bit, especially if they opt for a more PC-like system in which the GPU and CPU have their own separate memory pool.

        • If they pull this off, the Windows store and Xbox games could become serious competition for Steam.

          • I like the idea and in theory it's great. Just having Phil throw the idea around and talking about it publicly is even more so. The only way I can see a hardware update is either via Kinect cable or SS USB on the side with a device that sits next to and works with the current XB1. Kind of like one of those mini computers available but, specifically for XB1 only. Because lets face it, having people actually open up their XB1 to install/change things like RAM or even as far as the CPU would be a PR disaster for MS. Could you imagine a person with no PC building skills changing a CPU chip?? However this will be interesting to see how this plays out if it does.

            • This would be awful for developers. They already have enough on their plate creating one (or multiple if it is for multiple platforms) version and testing/QA it. Now they will have to do that for each hardware iteration of the X1? Sounds like a nightmare. Phil seems like he means well, but consoles should not go this route.

              • This has been floated for time immemorial. Microsoft has a schizophrenic policy towards the PC. They've abandoned it time and time again only to then promise a renewed commitment. Here's the reality: Microsoft executives are out of touch with PC gaming. First off they're refusing to release games on Steam (you know, the thing everyone buys PC games from and all). When they commit to bringing big titles to PC it means Forza and Fable. The Windows 10 store doesn't know what it is. Anyone that's been paying attention for long enough has been here before. They've been here multiple times with Microsoft. They know how this is going to end.

                      • With more companies making modular devices this could happen with the next generation if they want it to. I'm imagining all of the parts will be easily replaced and plug and play. I'm intrigued and hope this comes to pass.

                        • Can't see this happening anytime soon. They would have to start programming for a device/hardware that the user MIGHT have? We've already seen how they treated the Kinect in that aspect.

                            • Interesting. We'd still be trading in the entire console for an upgrade until they let us open the box ourselves; how would pricing work?
