Of course. So the hive in the very beginning were not the hive. They were a very very weak race that was on the verge of extinction. That is when the traveler appeared to them. But also when the traveler appeared so did the worms. These worms were the living embodiment of the darkness, they are often referred to as the Ahmkara. Around this time three princess were reachin[i][/i]g their prime and feeling the threat of the impending doom of their race they sought power to help them become strong. *On a note the average lifespan of these creatures was 10 years At first they sought the travelers power but the worms contacted them first and convinced them that the Traveler was creating a massive world destroying wave to wipe out the weak Hive ( when in fact it was the worms manipulating them) these three princesses and sisters (Auryx, Savathun, and Xivu Arath) entered the deep aka darkness and sought out the worm, while there the worms wipe out their race. After the sisters find the worms they learn of the destruction of their race and enraged accept the powers of the darkness.... and this next part I'm going to link an article that summarizes it better than I do.
