That's just a figure of speech. What actually happens is a ghost can't rez a guardian in darkness, thus the ability to die. Destroying a ghost (which would be relatively easy) would kill the ghosts guardian permanently.

You looked at the ghost and assumed it had a shield. Saying it looks like it doesn't really hold up.
