Ok, here is an idea for Destiny 2 that I think everyone who dislikes Destiny story now could/possibly/might appreciate. First release a raid or set of story missions (we’ll call this a prelude) that involve the Vex you battle through this mission until the end where you find the Vex appear to be invading/tapping into a new universe. You lose the final battle and see the collapse of the entire universe out of nowhere the Stranger arrives to save you. She reveals that she is from another universe and that the Darkness is destroying alternate universes in the multiverse to limit the number of possible outcomes to the war. Your universe had been in collapse for some time (yet it was instantaneous). This collapse affected causality leaving many historical events unexplainable, confused, and blended with possibilities from other universes. The Stranger then uses her resources to drop you into another variation of the Destiny universe at the Battle of Twilight gap. You have now become the Stranger of this new universe. At this point you end the prelude and open the second game in this new universe. Because it is a new universe Bungie story tellers are then free to make tons of changes and remap the story. We as players get to participate in and possibly change the outcome of many of the interesting bits of lore we have picked up in the current Destiny.
Yeah, it is probably too late to change the story now but it isn’t like they didn’t already gut their story at the last second before.
Ok, let the nerd rage begin now!!

One nice part of this approach is the missing story of Destiny can be explained by the effect of being part of a universe that collapsed. The unraveling of causality leaves you unable to explain why you can't explain Destiny's plot. This is pretty much true already so why not roll with it?
