I love when people think they are part of the 1% Fact if you make 50k a year, around $45 of your taxes go to welfare, food stamps and social programs. $2k go to corporate subsidiaries annually. Also learn how taxes work. The proposal would not be that anyone that has a net taxable income over 4 million dollars would pay 45% tax. It is that anything over 4 million dollars made in net taxable income would be taxed 45%. Big difference. Not even sure how much actual income it would take to reach 4 million taxable but I am sure no one on this forum is close to that annually. FDR and Jefferson are some of our greatest leaders in history. See what they say about progress. Why do people continually back and support this? This is both a democratic and republican issue.

  • Last I checked $50k a year is basically the bare minimum now to be considered middle class - anything below that is essentially working-poor or just straight up poor. Hell even people making 250k a year doesn't necessarily cut it depending on where you live because real estate costs are insane BUT NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THIS. It's one of the few disappointments I have with Bernie from an otherwise fantastic candidate - no one seems to want to talk about how the astronomical cost of land is adversely affecting literally everything in the economy. Trump sure as hell won't since that's his bread and butter. Back in the 50's a nice house might have cost anywhere from 5~20k and people generally didn't spend more than 3% of their annual income on their mortgaes or rent. Now it's closer to 15~20% *just for your home* nevermind food utlities or entertainment etc. This is a major problem that needs to be addresssed.

  • I think the best part of this proposal would be that people that did make that much income would be encouraged to put that surplus money back into something rather than being taxed on it. Could go to charity, research, creating jobs....you name it. For those that are interested say your adjusted taxable income is around 6 million dollars. This is all take home money after deductions losses, things our govt consider reasonable expenses that we should not be taxed on etc. Based on credits for student loans, interest, mortgage/renters credits, a lot of this income is basically spending money. Not entirely but a good amount of it will be. That's a lot of gravy. Of that 6 million, 4 million is taxed a little higher but not much higher than you and me. The other 2 million, the individual could do a number of things. 1. Pay 45% tax and effectively help our deficit and country prosper. 2. Spread it out to charitable donations to help different causes and not be taxed on it. 3. Reinvest it into the economy where you may not make a ton of money but you are creating jobs and helping all of us prosper. Really any of the options are helpful for everyone. Not sure why people, especially we the people see the bad in this. This does not affect our income. The 1% make a lot of money on us and I am not saying take it away but we have to stop making concessions for billionaires who already have all the money. They get all the tax breaks and concessions from our tax money as it is. Republicans and democrats have both been in corporate Americas pocket to push their agendas. Bernie may not be the answer, but a breath of fresh air and someone who stands up for anyone who makes less than 200k a year is a good thing.

  • Most of the likes likely come from approval of the intention. I think it's great to use something relatable to teach politics. Where OP messed up is when he allowed the message become biased. But we're free to push whatever political agenda we want. Side note: if OP offends, maybe beat em at his own game with a less reductionist, Destiny-related political metaphor?
