Politics was not the only thing that caused the downfall of Detroit.
Industry moving to others countries had a huge effect. I grew up in Flint, and watched tens of thousands lose jobs. I'm quite sure profit not politics drove this move.

i partially agree, but why did that business move? i would argue the cost of doing business became too great due to high taxes, increased regulation, and increased labor cost due to unions (e.g. auto industry), which put them at a great disadvantage compared to their Japanese competitors who could operate at lower costs more efficiently.
