Imagine you are on a fireteam with your friend who is better than you, and every time you join a game you match against other players of his level. Would you be having any fun if the entire enemy team was way more skilled than you?

It doesn't stomp randoms though. On every team there will always be a great player, a bad player, and a few in the middle. It will be reflective of the community. Bad players always playing only bad players is dumb. Good players always only playing good players is dumb. Good player should get to stomp bad ones. Bad ones should get to be stopped. You talk about improvement. How does someone awful improve if they only ever play awful players? Most people learn by facing a challenge.

Seems like you've got yourself mixed around Sbmm- matches you with people with around the same combat rating / kd etc So you're being matched with players around your skill level with a little above or below your own- though not by too far a margin This way players improve their skills It's a gradual advancement through the skill ladder So if you're not willing to improve your skills or only wanting to demolish randoms Guess you get to stay out of the crucible

"Would you be having any fun if the entire enemy team was way more skilled than you?" Thats what usually happens without SBMM. I'm 53, and can not match the reaction times of younger players. Because of this, I have mostly stayed away from PVP. That means a lot of bounties have gone uncompleted for me. At least now, and especially if they take care of the lag, that I can at least have a chance of enjoying PVP, and have a chance to complete things related to it.
