The Days Have Turned... (Destiny's Will to Death)

Hope is a funny thing. It can get you to the next day, but it can also lead to disappointment. Destiny was built and marketed on hope and each day we wait for that hope to be realized and each day it slips further away. A year and a half ago, we had the hope of what Destiny would be. Five months ago we had the hope of year 2. Two weeks ago we had the hope of a new calendar year. Yesterday the forums, reddit and gaming sites were once again aflame with the absolute train wreck that is the state of the crucible, the endless lag, connection issues and yet another broken (Nightfall) Strike. How have we gotten here? Year one for all its flaws and for all this game wasn't in terms of the giant explorable solar system many of us expected, was still immensely fun. If there was one complaint to rule them all in year one it was accessibility and the lack of built in matchmaking features. There was this amazing content in the VoG and it was like an actual job to try to group up to play it. Yes there were other issues like Vault space, zoo errors, bad economies and initially the loss of vanilla gear with TDB, but the strikes were all fun, PvP was a blast and the weapons were phenomenal. Year 2 had problems from the start. First with wonky pricing and making year one players re-buy content to get bonus exclusives, to eventually gutting the game for anyone who didn't purchase the expansion. For a lot of players that was the jumping off point, but for those who purchased TTK, it really had a lot to offer at the start. The new content (yes it can be debated what constitutes "new" as the Dreadnaught was later found to be the original final level) offered more story than we'd gotten in all of year one. The new missions and strikes were fun. The gunsmith and Armsday were a fresh addition. The new subclasses were all a blast and the overall presentation was smoother with the changes to bounty and quest logs. After my playtime in HoW dropping to mainly just Iron Banner when it would roll around, I was back to playing all the time and it started out pretty great until I leveled up all 3 new subclasses. That’s when it first became apparent that unless you had a raid group or wanted to wade into the epeening world of LFG, there was about 4 days worth of meaningful content to run a week and after that there were basically almost no marks or meaningful rewards to acquire until the next reset. When TTK dropped, one of the things that immediately jumped out was how freely purples (and with 3oC, exotics as well) flowed compared to year one. From the first 3 strikes of the week, to Armsday requisitions, it seemed we'd find great gear much easier. The reality ended up being something quite a bit different. In year one I was constantly finding new things to try and they'd become my new favorite. Cryptic Dragon Suros MIDA B-Line Trauma Vanquisher Up for Anything Three Little Words Coiled Hiss Hygeia Noblesse Na3d1 Salvation State Plug One Wizard 77 Plan C Truth Dragons Breath (I liked it) Gjally LDR (all 3 elements) Saterienne Rapier Icebreaker Abyss Defiant Every time something new dropped, it had the potential to be great and not only that, but unique versions of them would drop. I still have 3 Coiled Hiss, one with 3rd Eye, one with glass half full and one the perfect balance laser from the vendor. The weapons year one (and particularly once they introduced Etheric Light to bring forward vanilla gear) were beyond awesome. Year 2 saw us lose all that, but there was the hope that the new gear would prove even better. Instead, 5 months into TTK (yeah, it's been that long), I still not only have yet to find weapons I like or that work as well as my year one weapons, but the semi-decent shit I do find, I can't get with perk rolls I want. Seriously, I've leveled up DO probably 30 times since TTK dropped and not one time have I gotten a Hung Jury in a rewards package. I don't -blam!-ing want Firefly; I want Full Auto, 3rd Eye and/or Explosive Rounds. Same for Last Extremity, hasn't -blam!-ing dropped. It's like the game sees I don't use shotguns, Sidearms or Hand Cannons and gives me them every single -blam!-ing time. 5 month into this Expansion my main weapon is still Last Extremity and I barely used it last IB because of the stupid nerfs that made using Scouts "a crutch". Literally everything I use regularly I got within the first 2 weeks of TTK dropping. Bungie will take that and turn it into their vindication for all the tragic weapon "balancing" they've done, but the fact of the matter is that over the first 8 months this game was out until they decided to completely -blam!- ARs, I used more and loved more weapons in this game than I have in all the time since. When Destiny launched anything was viable. Special ammo was basically infinite and yet I used my primary 90% of the time in PvP. It wasn't until ARs were nerfed that the dawn of the shotgun descended upon us and it's been one painful debacle after another since. I'm not going to go into that full history here as there are enough threads about Weisnewski and his pathological destruction, but the fact is that 5 months into TTK there just aren't any interesting weapons to acquire (even raid gear) and the few that are somewhat interesting either have been nerfed to the point of being pointless or are just not worth the endless grind trying to get versions with perks that just won't ever drop. And that unfortunately brings us to the final straw that's broken year 2 which is all the content that we did love and that was great that was left behind. And no, not just all the amazing gear and weapons. Winter's Run Summoning Pit Devil's Lair The Nexus VoG Crota's End PoE Flaming -blam!-ing Skulls Nightfall XP bonuses Yeah we got Sparrow Racing and it was fun, but it wasn't enough to counter this last weapon patch that was the final straw for a lot of people or the way TTK has failed to evolve and add to its initial promise at all.
Inscrutable loot filled fortress
I bet I haven't been to the dreadnaught in a month and a half. I know Bungie read our posts and I genuinely believe that some like Cozmo, the artists, programmers and designers probably care immensely about this game, but I'm not sure anymore that the passions of those who pour their hearts into this game are enough to overcome the minds of those determined to shape it into the twisted caricature it's become. I don't know DeeJ personally, but we all know he doesn't play Destiny. I have no doubt that Mr. Weisnewski is a grand fellow irl, but I hold him more responsible for making this game unplayable than anyone else. So what are the answers and what can fix this? CONTENT AND FUN. Two things that have been ripped from this game at every turn. We never got more powerful, we got nerfed. We didn't find new worlds to explore; we were forced to abandon those we loved. We’ve all been on this roller coaster together for a long time now and those who’ve stayed on the ride and those who’ve jumped off… We all still want the same thing. We want Destiny to be great and even when we spend less time in-game, we’re still here because this community is made up of so many people who genuinely care and want this game to be better and keep hoping Bungie isn’t just listening, but actually taking our thoughts and feedback to heart. It's time to bring back the old content. It's time to make year one strikes and raids relevant again. It's time to roll back all the weapon balancing (the road to hell is paved with those well intentioned patches). IT'S TIME TO BRING FORWARD ALL YEAR ONE WEAPONS and it's time to let us play how we want to play and not how some dev wants us to play this month, because I can tell you right now, I have played exactly once since the last IB ended and it just pissed me off to use the wreck that are weapons in 2.0.1 I have said before that I understand that 90% of Bungie are working on Destiny 2 and I hope to God that they are learning from the sins of this release, but that does not excuse year 2 being butchered and left to die. Hope. It's a funny thing and it's sad watching it die.

I feel like the only way to achieve perfect balance in the normal Crucible is to just nuke all the weapon and armor stats so that everything has a different damage type depending on the weapon, or the same amount of damage resistance so no weapon is greater than the other. Essentially Halo logic.
I have said before that I understand that 90% of Bungie are working on Destiny 2 and I hope to God that they are learning from the sins of this release, but that does not excuse year 2 being butchered and left to die..
Unfortunately, I feel like they have no choice. Destiny 1 was a complete and utter disaster from both a developers standpoint that the Army Corps of Engineers wouldn't even be able to save it. The situation only worsened when they released the game with almost none of the content that was mentioned during the E3 Conference and they gave everyone the silent treatment afterwards. Given the circumstances, they only had two options: Delay the next mega installment until D1 was reworked, or regroup and start D2 from scratch. The fact that they've confirmed that they are releasing mini-quests with rewards instead of DLC tells me that they chose option 2, which is probably the smart choice.

      • I don't know what they are going to do at this point. The game has shed so many players it's ridiculous. I however have changed my outlook and what I expect to get out of the game based on what has happened. I deleted my Titan and Warlock and created a second Hunter to share gear. This helps combat the pitiful drop rates and double RNG of gear. I am also primarily playing for the HM raid and IB and that's it. Most weeks will be a couple hours and more when IB comes around. It's quite sad for a game that I used to play 30-40 hours a week to just a couple.

      • The game isn't dying, and its unfair to act as if other long-running games don't face (and have to over come) similar problems. Familiarity, Sols, breeds contempt. The longer we look at someone (or something) the more our biological programming takes over and we tend to focus on its problems and what annoys us about it (we are hardwired to attune to problems and potential threats, and dismiss good things). So, over time, we lose perspective as to what are the good traits in someone/something that drew us to them/it. All that is going on is that Bungie made an recent update....and that update has clearly introduced some sort of glitch or bug that is causing problems with P2P connections with extended ping times. ...and it unfortunately happened when Bungie was planning on letting their employees have an extended holiday break. While nothing is gained by ignoring problems. Nothing is gained by trying to turn problems into catastrophes.

        • This is what happens when you allow corporate whores to run a game company. This game is fixable, but the obtuse suits in charge do not care, nor do they know anything about the game and it's mechanics. 1. New light level should be 1000. 2. Give us weapons that are not rip offs of each other. Did they watch Grandmas Boy? All they did was change the color of weapons, and enemies. 3. Get rid of infusion and go back to green, blue, purple then exotic progression. 4. Raid Matchmaking must happen. Even if it is a special event. 5. The next DLC should be free, for all the flip flops, and empty promises. Simply the game give you nothing in return for playing it.

        • Good post. I miss old raids too. They should just level everything up to 300-320 and let us run all of it. Why the -blam!- not at this point? Let us get VoG/CE/PoE weapons armor at 300-320. Why the -blam!- not? Solution for the elemental primary problem: by letting us infuse an elemental primary into a non-elemental primary, the non-elemental gains elemental damage. No more weapon diversity problem. Voila.

        • Pretty much agree with you on everything except your implication that HoW was less than stellar (which you later stated was some of the best time in Destiny - which it was - due to Etheric Light). HoW was the "Golden Age" of Destiny thanks to Etheric Light whether you liked the brief HoW campaign and PoE or not. Etheric Light made all the raids relevant so everyone was running them and it therefore gave us true weapon and gear diversity and it was FUN! Truly, for my money, HoW or rather the period of time represented, was the best state or Destiny and it is the reason I plopped down my $80 for the CE version of TTK. All they needed to do from HoW was 1) add more stuff for me to shoot at 2) more maps and 3) new level cap. Literally should NOT have touched anything else. The Y1 economy was light years better than this shit show IMO. From a pure timeline perspective, it is AMAZING how much of a nose dive this game took. In 1 expansion - ONE - we went from "The Golden Age" to "The Collapse" in Destiny terms. It wasn't even a slow decline. Just BANG - shit show. Add a Y2 version of Etheric Light (sorry people who cling to this weak minded thought - but Y2 does not equal Destiny 2 and this is NOT an MMO or RPG for that matter, it's a FPS so like ANY FPS I expect to have my full arsenal until Destiny 2/end #final - also at the thought that Y1 weapons were all gamebreakingly OP - HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAH) which would make Y1 content viable again and BANG - you go right back up the charts I bet. As far as Crucible - fuq - way too much there to address than I have time or energy for right now lol. This game has turned into a comedy act that I don't care to watch anymore. I used to play this game close to 5 hours a day when I would get on. Now it's maybe 5 hours a week and I'm a Day 1 player. They really took a festering day after heavy drinking beer shit all over this game. The ol' screen door as it were.

        • Well it's funny, year one, release and both DLCs, was a train wreck. Over a cliff, into a volcano. Year two started with the same BS. The release of "Shiny objects" to distract the players and draw their attention away from the continuing corrupt development. The endless releasing of the original game before the prerelease abortion. Things that were an original part of the game but gutted out for some ridiculous reason. About the only consistent accomplishment that Bungievision has managed to pull off is to not stop the relentless slide into insignificance. My friends list has gone from being populated by Destiny ages to now being completely devoid of them. This game has died the death that many of us saw coming over a year ago.

From Morpheus: "Welcome to the real world." Good posting Sol. I pretty much talked to them (vainly - as expected) here: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/185826743/0/0 I never did get TTK, as I wanted to see/hear what others had to say about it, but what I saw they did to me for not purchasing was a rapid combination of blows - (punches thrown in sequence): left jab, as it left me out of a lot things that I once was able to do followed by a straight right, that sent gameplay straight into the dumps and right into oblivion followed by a left hook, which was to try to get me to choose to be left out of a large chunk of play-ability or to be hooked into purchasing I chose not to purchase, but also not to give up punching right back at them by letting people know of their tactics and conduct.

          • I've posted many times on these forums myself, have been playing pretty much every day since day 1. 2 weeks now I've not logged in, managed to get off the hamster wheel. I've kept going despite knowing exactly what Bungievision is all about and what Destiny really is in the hope that the game will turn into the one I envisioned it to be before release. Unfortunately I know it never will be, and i'm just tired of all the excuses and bullshit from them dragging this game out without bothering to invest in the development it deserves. I'm done, until something changes.

          • You must have forgotten about running around in circles on the map just to collect enough spin metal to unlock ONE perk bubble on your armor. That wasn't fun. TTK has done more good than bad for Destiny. Yes, I do miss the old strikes being on the heroic difficulty playlist but that doesn't mean they are irrelevant. You can go to the legacy strike list and play them. Between encoded engrams dropping like candy and three of coins, you can do the old strikes and still get decent loot. Same goes for the old raids in regards to the three of coins.

            • I'll be honest I usually skip right over your forum posts because they seem to be almost bipolar. With that being said I come to the realization that you are going through the same hope/frustration struggle we all have been going through. The main points you hit the nail on the head with content stripping, pvp weapon disaster and connection issues. If there are people at bungie that give a shit about this game I am not seeing it. I can't name the last time they actually came through with a great change that the community requested. While I'm on that subject we need a community manager that plays the -blam!-ing game. Deej and Cosmo are casuals at best. The community manager needs to be knee deep in the content so they can understand exactly what the community is experiencing. They have left this game to die and I doubt anything will change with destiny 2. Even if it does change how long will it be supported? Hope is a stretched term at this point. While I wait for content or support and yet I feel like one of the hopeless people that thought they would win the Powerball. Don't worry though they will rerelease ice breaker and gally within the next couple months in an attempt to revive destiny....Most of us will see right through that fog. If you haven't already abandon ship!

                • I wrote a post at the end of HoW when TTK was announced and it was confirmed that yr1 gear would not carry over...etc.,etc,etc. I wrote about much of what is posted here as of late and the forum members attacked me. Now players are finally seeing it for what it is. I wasn't going to buy TTK much less pre order but I did. I purchased it last minute the night b4 as I didn't want to be behind my friends and I certainly didn't want to miss the pre order suros package exclusive...what a F'ing joke. By the time I figured out where to even claim it I already had better guns from "drop's". That's when I realized that they got me again. The messed up thing is that it's all a business model by design as who in their right mind would plan as they go with that amount of money...? Anyway I am glad that people are finally opening up their eye's. The thing is that there's a whole 'new' yr2 TTK player base to prey on...oh well.
