The Days Have Turned... (Destiny's Will to Death)

Hope is a funny thing. It can get you to the next day, but it can also lead to disappointment. Destiny was built and marketed on hope and each day we wait for that hope to be realized and each day it slips further away. A year and a half ago, we had the hope of what Destiny would be. Five months ago we had the hope of year 2. Two weeks ago we had the hope of a new calendar year. Yesterday the forums, reddit and gaming sites were once again aflame with the absolute train wreck that is the state of the crucible, the endless lag, connection issues and yet another broken (Nightfall) Strike. How have we gotten here? Year one for all its flaws and for all this game wasn't in terms of the giant explorable solar system many of us expected, was still immensely fun. If there was one complaint to rule them all in year one it was accessibility and the lack of built in matchmaking features. There was this amazing content in the VoG and it was like an actual job to try to group up to play it. Yes there were other issues like Vault space, zoo errors, bad economies and initially the loss of vanilla gear with TDB, but the strikes were all fun, PvP was a blast and the weapons were phenomenal. Year 2 had problems from the start. First with wonky pricing and making year one players re-buy content to get bonus exclusives, to eventually gutting the game for anyone who didn't purchase the expansion. For a lot of players that was the jumping off point, but for those who purchased TTK, it really had a lot to offer at the start. The new content (yes it can be debated what constitutes "new" as the Dreadnaught was later found to be the original final level) offered more story than we'd gotten in all of year one. The new missions and strikes were fun. The gunsmith and Armsday were a fresh addition. The new subclasses were all a blast and the overall presentation was smoother with the changes to bounty and quest logs. After my playtime in HoW dropping to mainly just Iron Banner when it would roll around, I was back to playing all the time and it started out pretty great until I leveled up all 3 new subclasses. That’s when it first became apparent that unless you had a raid group or wanted to wade into the epeening world of LFG, there was about 4 days worth of meaningful content to run a week and after that there were basically almost no marks or meaningful rewards to acquire until the next reset. When TTK dropped, one of the things that immediately jumped out was how freely purples (and with 3oC, exotics as well) flowed compared to year one. From the first 3 strikes of the week, to Armsday requisitions, it seemed we'd find great gear much easier. The reality ended up being something quite a bit different. In year one I was constantly finding new things to try and they'd become my new favorite. Cryptic Dragon Suros MIDA B-Line Trauma Vanquisher Up for Anything Three Little Words Coiled Hiss Hygeia Noblesse Na3d1 Salvation State Plug One Wizard 77 Plan C Truth Dragons Breath (I liked it) Gjally LDR (all 3 elements) Saterienne Rapier Icebreaker Abyss Defiant Every time something new dropped, it had the potential to be great and not only that, but unique versions of them would drop. I still have 3 Coiled Hiss, one with 3rd Eye, one with glass half full and one the perfect balance laser from the vendor. The weapons year one (and particularly once they introduced Etheric Light to bring forward vanilla gear) were beyond awesome. Year 2 saw us lose all that, but there was the hope that the new gear would prove even better. Instead, 5 months into TTK (yeah, it's been that long), I still not only have yet to find weapons I like or that work as well as my year one weapons, but the semi-decent shit I do find, I can't get with perk rolls I want. Seriously, I've leveled up DO probably 30 times since TTK dropped and not one time have I gotten a Hung Jury in a rewards package. I don't -blam!-ing want Firefly; I want Full Auto, 3rd Eye and/or Explosive Rounds. Same for Last Extremity, hasn't -blam!-ing dropped. It's like the game sees I don't use shotguns, Sidearms or Hand Cannons and gives me them every single -blam!-ing time. 5 month into this Expansion my main weapon is still Last Extremity and I barely used it last IB because of the stupid nerfs that made using Scouts "a crutch". Literally everything I use regularly I got within the first 2 weeks of TTK dropping. Bungie will take that and turn it into their vindication for all the tragic weapon "balancing" they've done, but the fact of the matter is that over the first 8 months this game was out until they decided to completely -blam!- ARs, I used more and loved more weapons in this game than I have in all the time since. When Destiny launched anything was viable. Special ammo was basically infinite and yet I used my primary 90% of the time in PvP. It wasn't until ARs were nerfed that the dawn of the shotgun descended upon us and it's been one painful debacle after another since. I'm not going to go into that full history here as there are enough threads about Weisnewski and his pathological destruction, but the fact is that 5 months into TTK there just aren't any interesting weapons to acquire (even raid gear) and the few that are somewhat interesting either have been nerfed to the point of being pointless or are just not worth the endless grind trying to get versions with perks that just won't ever drop. And that unfortunately brings us to the final straw that's broken year 2 which is all the content that we did love and that was great that was left behind. And no, not just all the amazing gear and weapons. Winter's Run Summoning Pit Devil's Lair The Nexus VoG Crota's End PoE Flaming -blam!-ing Skulls Nightfall XP bonuses Yeah we got Sparrow Racing and it was fun, but it wasn't enough to counter this last weapon patch that was the final straw for a lot of people or the way TTK has failed to evolve and add to its initial promise at all.
Inscrutable loot filled fortress
I bet I haven't been to the dreadnaught in a month and a half. I know Bungie read our posts and I genuinely believe that some like Cozmo, the artists, programmers and designers probably care immensely about this game, but I'm not sure anymore that the passions of those who pour their hearts into this game are enough to overcome the minds of those determined to shape it into the twisted caricature it's become. I don't know DeeJ personally, but we all know he doesn't play Destiny. I have no doubt that Mr. Weisnewski is a grand fellow irl, but I hold him more responsible for making this game unplayable than anyone else. So what are the answers and what can fix this? CONTENT AND FUN. Two things that have been ripped from this game at every turn. We never got more powerful, we got nerfed. We didn't find new worlds to explore; we were forced to abandon those we loved. We’ve all been on this roller coaster together for a long time now and those who’ve stayed on the ride and those who’ve jumped off… We all still want the same thing. We want Destiny to be great and even when we spend less time in-game, we’re still here because this community is made up of so many people who genuinely care and want this game to be better and keep hoping Bungie isn’t just listening, but actually taking our thoughts and feedback to heart. It's time to bring back the old content. It's time to make year one strikes and raids relevant again. It's time to roll back all the weapon balancing (the road to hell is paved with those well intentioned patches). IT'S TIME TO BRING FORWARD ALL YEAR ONE WEAPONS and it's time to let us play how we want to play and not how some dev wants us to play this month, because I can tell you right now, I have played exactly once since the last IB ended and it just pissed me off to use the wreck that are weapons in 2.0.1 I have said before that I understand that 90% of Bungie are working on Destiny 2 and I hope to God that they are learning from the sins of this release, but that does not excuse year 2 being butchered and left to die. Hope. It's a funny thing and it's sad watching it die.

  • ........yep When they announced the changes in the economy for patch 2.0 I said they'd be garbage, limiting us on what we can obtain and which events were relevant. Weekly heroics no longer viable as 27 strange coins have vanished and nightfall would become a tedious waste of time as rewards wouldn't be as awesome.....people said I was crazy and didn't know what I was talking about because I hadn't experienced it yet. Announcements on the new level, light and infusion system were teased...I said it would take way to long, use up too many materials and burn through the marks that were being reduce to a sixth of what they were...again I was yelled out of the post. Weapon part Nerf came next and again I knew it would suck.....more people telling me that it would be better because we'd be able to buy them...NOPE! EVERYTHING IN 2.0....AND EVERYTHING HERE AFTER has been introduced for one soul purpose....INCREASING GRIND AND GAME TIME...I'm tired of saying it, Bungie is only concerned on how much they can say we play, that's it bottom line. Now they know how many sheeple buy silver it won't get better...all they'll do is keep dangling that carrot, getting people to throw money at the screen. Destiny 2 is going to be a backwards, spray painted and shiner version of what we've already seen if it sees light of day at all. It's time to cut the cord people!

      • You have left out what they have also done to XUR intermittent weaponry three of coins! I have yet to get an exotic from them and have stopped buying them, exotic engrams (waste of coins) if they wanted new players to buy form him they should have made other arrangements for them to purchase from him which would have made more sense, they have made him into a has been, and what about the quests? where are they now? all dried up like the game has. If there is to be a new DLC coming you an bet your bottom dollar its going to be the same old hat, same enemy's, same (bang, bang your dead ) scenario's, same planets, each time I do a mission it's like being in a ghost town, what was once thronging with players is now virtually empty I would like to see single player or even duo player stealth missions which would at least give some variety to the play, you mentioned in you article the racing! fine for those who want racing games but seems to me like putting sticking plaster on open heart surgery, some other writers have asked for VOG and the like to be updated to year 2 but WHATS POINT IN THAT, again it's the same old same old over and over again nothing new nothing fresh, how about introducing humanoid opponents with similar agenda's ? if the powers that be seriously want the game to last the ten years forecast they really do need to pull their socks up and do some serious thinking about where the game is heading as is, and as is, is heading for the dumpster.

Reforge was great for me - I played with so many guns I would NEVER have touched. I liked the variety also and the fact that anything that dropped could be a potential favourite. • I wish more missions would be like The Paradox. Even though it had no cutscenes, it brought a flavor of mystery and acomplishment. It's still reuse of old missions, but in an interesting way. Those who found the ghosts, esp. the third one in the cave are real heroes. Would never have found those ghosts on my own. Why no tools to find them? Make an extra mission to acquire a ghost that scans for hidden ghosts and gives you hints. Why no cutscenes that give clues where to search? This game feels still like a big beta.

The last week or so on Destiny has been heartbreaking. It started going downhill at 2.0. I saw that set of nerfs on everyone's favorite PvE weapons, and that's when I realized things were about to go wrong. I don't need to list all the bugs and glitches and crap that's going on, I'm sure most of you are familiar with the situation. I hope it gets better, but I doubt it can at this point. It's about time to let this one lie and think back on the good times we all had during HoW, while popping out the disc and replacing it with another one.

          • I really wish there was some way to acquire year one weaponry again. Oh man I missed my chance to purchase a Lord High Fixer, or get lucky an get the Dead Orbit hand cannon. I just wish we were able to grind a strike or see the black Smith sell a kit of year one weapons. I wish I can see more diversity with Amory too, I wanted a fur coat chest piece for mg titan in year one but sadly I just never gotten it, I regret it, an unfortunately they sell the chest piece for New Monarchy but I don't want a logo on my chest! If only there was a way for us all to get our hands on the classic weaponry an Amory again, I just hope I can ever get my hands on a Lord High Fixer. I even still have my Ghost Angel Cloak for my Hunter. Just one day I hope I can get those gear again.

I kept playing until recently because I still enjoyed the game, but this game has been torn apart with nearly every decision before and after TTK launched. Now the reality of the futility of playing has set in. Destiny has the facade going on that you're constantly working towards something, but progress is so rapid-fire with regards to achieving a high enough level to partake in any given activity that any of the remaining (and limited) "endgame" is paltry. I'm primarily a solo player and even the 2 people I'd consistently play with have all but abandoned the game, along with my other friends who played consistently. Yet what's the incentive for people to keep playing, especially when the fun of the game has been ripped apart? Solo players can do Heroic Strikes, which have only gotten stingier with their loot, and it's not like they're guaranteed to give you a boost to your Light Level (neither are the Raids), or Crucible, whose only two consistencies are the lag and constant imbalances. Not exactly a fulfilling combination. As for team players? They've got a Raid that doesn't even guarantee them highest Light Level, and even if it did, what then would they have to accomplish? And Trials of Osiris, well, my above point(s) about Crucible still stand. Not to mention the loot, the main reason many of us originally kept playing and grinding, is literally just the same gear we acquired before, only it's constantly nerfed into oblivion, so not only are we experiencing deja vu, but that very experience has gone from feeling like warm bread fresh out of the oven to now being stiff, stale and mold-ridden. At least one Destiny channel has proposed that the remaining Exotics we were supposed to get with TTK may come with the February update/event, but I honestly believe it'll be too little too late. Especially considering how underwhelming new gear has been, as well as how anything strong or otherwise competent gets frequently used and is promptly neutered. The best indication of the future is past behavior. What's funny (yet simultaneously tragic) is that I saw The Revenant just last night, and the one scene that's still stuck with me involves a bear.
When the bear spots Leonardo DiCaprio, it immediately attacks and severely wounds him. There's blood, scrapes and screams. It's intense. The scene pulverized me, yet it left Leo's character debilitated to the point you agree with the film's antagonist when he says "best thing to do would be to kill him now, give him a clean finish." Leo's encounter with the bear creates a terrible plight for him, one full of anguish, one that any one of us would have given up on long before him.
Essentially, I see Destiny as Leonardo DiCaprio's character in The Revenant and Bungie as the bear, except the bear always comes back to put Leo through more pain and suffering.

            • Talking about something is A LOT different than doing something about it. Your points are usually valid but, as I've said before, they fall on deaf ears and you are wasting them. A BOYCOTT, is the only thing that will make them listen or change...for the simple reason that, if they want to survive/get more money from us...then they better listen. Sink or swim is our best weapon for change that ALL gamers deserve.

There are other MP games to play with friends too. Destiny isn't going to change. Save yourself some grief and leave it in the dust.

              • Spot on. In year 1, there was always something that I wanted to play for, a weapon or piece of armor that I had to have. Black hammer, Fang of Ur Yut, Gally, or the final piece of crota armor that got me to lvl 32. The nightfalls were always exciting, whether you got a good reward, or not. It was a game that always had something to do, something that I wanted to do. Now, when I log on, I play for just a little while, there is no excitement, the 3 of coins gave me nearly all the exotics in the first few weeks of playing, and the rest of the game just isn't that exciting or fun to play any more. I used to turn to crucible when all else failed, but now and for the last few months, there is always some sort of bug, glitch, or error code. These new micro transaction events have done little for me. I don't care about doing a strike or playing crucible with a tiger mask on, nor do I find it interesting to put an Atheon mask on and jump off the tower. Sparrow racing for fun for about 5 races, then it got old, an unenjoyable grind. It sucks because this is a game I still want to play, I know it was fun, and still has the potential to still be fun, but right now it just isn't. I used to be excited for destiny 2, I figured I would hold out and finish original destiny on my 360 and then move up to the xbox one when destiny 2 came out. But as of right now I have so little faith in bungie that I really have no interest in their products any more. I might still get an xbox one in the future, but it won't be for the sole purpose of destiny 2. The decisions made by the bungie hierarchy are driving me away from the game, and have put up a wall between me and destiny 2. A wall that I don't think will ever come down.

              • I am worried actually about what Destiny 2 may or may not offer. Now there are a lot of assumptions here but they are based off of my experience from year one. They say our characters will carry forward. I have a funny feeling they may not. Why? Because what Bungie says and what they do are often two different things. At least that's what I have seen so far. I also think that Destiny 2 will completely flip the script on what we have seen so far. Destiny was the brain child of men who may or for some are no longer employed by Bungie. Destiny 2 is being designed by a whole new crew with their own visions and this may or may not be a good thing. Certain things are going to change. Year 2 gave us TTK which aside from some welcome changes also introduced a homogenization of game play as a whole. From the gear we have to wear to the weapons we have to use. Let me repeat myself here, gear we HAVE TO WEAR and weapons we HAVE TO USE. It even goes so far as forcing players to do certain activities. Time hated, err I mean gated quests to obtain certain gear or weapons(sleeper stimulant). I basically believe that Destiny 2 will offer some spectacular window dressing to admire but at its core will be a one note affair. With a complete overhaul of what we have come to love about the game. Subclasses, weapons, gear, abilities and perks will be intentionally made indistinguishable from one another in capabilities and feel with the emphasis being towards balance. This is basically the trend Bungie has been following so far in year 2 and if as I fear it continues on this course then Destiny 2 will be bright, shiny, loud and ultimately uninspired.

                • I'm in the same boat, Sols. I pretty much just get on for IB. I don't even run trials because my friends who I'd play with all weekend Y1 had enough of the deteriorating PvP and quit. I logged on today to test a few weapons and rank up with Banshee. Got a terribly rolled hakke pulse and couldn't find any desire to play anymore today.
