The Sol Progeny, The Black Garden, and the Vault of Glass

Remember that time when you used the eye of Zydron, the Gatelord to open the portal to the Black Garden and fought the three Vex minds controlled by The Black Heart? Did you feel a big sense of accomplishment and understanding about the feat you just preformed? No? Sorta? Well, I have come to the conclusion that your mission had a much greater impact than you may have ever considered. The origins of the Vault of Glass and the Heart of the Black Garden The inspiration for the Vault of Glass came from the data sent by Quaria, Blade Transform about the power of Oryx's Throne World.
There will be points in space and time where this data is vital. There will be great projects undertaken in the study of this ontological power, this throne-space. -Verse 5.1- End of failed timeline
Along with this data, Quaria also sends a captured worm larvae. This larvae grows, and eventually becomes what we know as the Heart of the Black Garden. The data Quaria sends also becomes the basis for the Vault of Glass, where the Vex attempt to recreate the power of Oryx's Throne world, a testing ground for the Vex's ontological power to change the laws of the universe. The Virgo Prohibition
"I sense a pattern here- a connection from this Vex outbreak, The Black Garden, and the Vault of Glass." - Ikora Rey
In the Rising Tide Mars story mission, you travel through the abandoned Mars subway system. There, you fight waves of Vex arriving here via Vex gates and destroy the Prohibitive Mind, the controlling Mind if the Virgo Prohibition. We know that the purpose of this Vex incursion was caused by these Vex being called home. The mysterious Exo Stranger tells us that the home for all Vex is the Black Garden. Now, let's delve into the Black Garden ourselves and try to see why this Vex programming had such a dramatic change in behavior. The Sol Progeny and the Vault of Glass The Black Heart of the Garden had three powerful Vex minds awaiting activation. These three Vex minds were known as the Sol Progeny: The Primeval Mind, the Imminent Mind, and the Eschaton Mind. We know the the Black Heart had a plan for these three Vex units, but we attacked the garden before it was strong enough to activate all three at once. Because of us, The Heart could only activate them one at a time as a defense mechanism. Because we did this, we pretty much saved the universe. But what are the Sol Progeny? Are they just big Vex activated by the Black Heart or is there more to them? Well, the dictionary definition of Progeny is: "The immediate descendants of a person." In Destiny terms, these three minds are the vessels for the Black Heart itself. Did you ever notice that the Sol Progeny resembled the Vex found in the Vault of Glass? There is a reason for that. Primeval means "having existed in the earliest stage or state." The Primeval Mind bears a striking resemblance to the Precursor Vex in the Vault of Glass (Also known as the Sol Primeval, sound familiar?), solidifying that they are likely the earliest form of the Vex we've ever encountered. Likewise, the Imminent Mind bears resemblance to the Sol Imminent (or the Descendants) in the Vault of Glass. The definition of imminent is: "Close in time, or about to occur." Lastly, we have the Eschaton Mind. The dictionary definition of eschaton is actually a Bible term meaning: "The day at the end of time, following Armageddon where God will decree the fates of all individual humans." For Destiny purposes, this means: The completion of the Vex's big plans. Now that we understand more about the Sol Progeny, we can delve into the purpose of these minds. Finale and Conclusion
"But the power of the Vex is not broken. Look into the Vault, Guardian, for it is said to hold powers the Progeny was meant to bring forth." -The Speaker
I believe that should the Black Heart have succeeded, it would have activated the three Progeny at once, the Virgo Prohibition would have taken them to the Vault of Glass and opened the door (it's no mistake that the Praetorians guarding the door are of the Virgo Prohibition) and the Progeny would have brought out all of the ontological powers of the Vault of Glass into reality and, thus, taken over the universe itself. Atheon is the Vex's Time Conflux meaning that he is the meeting place of past, present, and future, as evidenced by the presence of the Hezen Protective, Sol Primeval, and Sol Imminent all in the same place at the same time (The Glass Throne, also known as Atheon's room or the Gatekeeper room). So, not only would the Vex have wove themselves into the fabric of reality, they would have done it in the present, future, and the past. There would be no way to undo this, because as far as the universe would be concerned, it has always been that way. TL;DR:
If you hadn't stopped the Sol Progeny in the Black Garden mission, the Vex would have taken over all of reality.
I'd also like to give special thanks to Ruin Tree and KAGEHOSHI for helping to solidify this post. • Your own definition points towards Atheon being the VoG itself, rather than our perception of that to be dominant as body within. As a robot I can understand being both and so can any Vex. This points towards us never completing VoG. Don't just flip out and say " but I saw Atheon's death" In that kind of construct we would perceive that. Just like you can understand "I am my arm and more than that myself." Keep looking. The answer rests at the merging of dark and light. Atheon may still be alive and a good guy...

          • I'd also like to point out that the Heart was close to full strenght, as we see in the Ghost Fregment: Queen's Brother grimoire card:
The machine flicked its wings. The prince stroked them flat with slow assured motions. "Tell me your news," he said again. "What's the harm?" "The Heart is growing stronger," the crow said. "The Vex transformation has begun, and the Progeny are stirring."
So, we really cut it down to the wire with this.

            • Prob my favorite of the lore posts. The calcified frags have added a ton more depth to our understanding of the destiny world. Glad you took the time to investigate more. Very good job! Very clear explanation, and good usage of grim quotes for your reasoning. And well done to those who helped you.

            • Good post. I still doubt that the heart of the Garden is actually a worm though. I think Quria's understanding of the power of worship was vital, but I don't think it's the captured worm that the Vex worship. We know Oryx's power of Taking comes from the Darkness itself, and NOT the worms. Eris Morn claims the same power responsible for the Taken (the Darkness) is the same as the power that was growing in the Black Garden, suggesting that the Garden's heart is the Darkness.
Oryx wields this power. But Oryx did not make it. We face the same flower we met in the Black Garden. (The Taken)
Following talks with Bungie about the story, Gameinformer also states that the heart is a fragment of the Darkness.
In particular, at least some part of the conflict arises from the Vex possession of a fragment of the Darkness, which is hidden in a place called the Black Garden (source)
• Here comes the people who will complain about how bad the in-game lore is. Awesome theory, and it's just another item on the list of times the guardians surpassed all probability and "saved" the universe.

                  • Speaking of the lore, does anyone else believe that Eris is a double agent for Savathun and used us to get rid of Oryx for her to take over the hive? It would fit with her being the cunning one of the 3 sibling proto-hive.

Not sure what to say. It's easy to tie strings together based on assumptions from reading the background. But it's not in the game. Had we known any of this, there would have been drive to go to the black garden and a story behind it, rather than simply being told to do so. And they are the same three enemies, but this story seems to try to justify the lazy repetition of fighting the same boss three times. Why couldn't we have been told they were supposedly significant, rather than coming back to an unsatisfying speech at the tower. I'd say the execution was done poorly, but there was no execution. It took you this long, looking through so much background to figure out their explanation for repetition in the end-game mission. I've even heard people try to say that the reason no one at the tower talks about you defeating Atheon the way they do for crota or oryx is because the vault of glass exists outside of time, so no one can remember you defeating him. I was under the impression that the company just didn't add that feature in, or added it to npc's later to make you feel like you did something that matters, but was sobering to see how deep people would go for anything that can be pieced together to defend this game. The story is neat, but we never see it, and it's so easy to draw lines to cover up the mistakes. I see destiny like this: it's a big action movie that you go to see in the theater. The fighting is cool, the effects are at times stunning, and there might even be a laugh or two in there. But you keep looking for substance. You see the war, but why are they fighting? Why do all sides seem to be on their last leg, holding back, or staging for some kind of big push? What will the push be? Who's winning? Or even, who are the good guys? Basic cliches are there: scrapers that live off the junk they find, an organized military empire, magical risen dead that are always trying to summon something, machines that want to kill everything that breaths, a puppet master, and few super warriors that have to power to fight them all. Nothing really new, but nothing really builds. The movie ends when the action is finally getting stale, and you walk out to see the ticket venders handing out packets of note cards to people leaving the movie. You ask what it is to be told it's the "real" story, but you couldn't read it until you left the movie. You look at a few and say they're kind of everywhere and don't really make since, to which they reply, "I know right?! The story is so deep and intricate. There's huge speculation as to what they really mean and how they go together! Some people are even trying to spot some special weapons that have a story of their own, but all tie together in an interesting way." Even though you were kind of disappointed at the lack of story, all the speculation says the story will be revealed in the squeal, so you go see it. And when you do, it's the same thing in a new place, setting you up for another squeal.
Also, sleeper simulent showed the entropy being generated in looking for information in the flash cards, I know it did for me.
Good job on the research though, I applaud you for that.
