It is (IMO) "dead" in the fact that both its initial purpose (to give violent medieval men a code of conduct to keep from killing innocents at whim) and its later inference that it was a way for "proper gentlemen to behave when it came to the more fair and weaker sex" are no longer socially relevant or necessary.
I believe that the modern standards of common courtesy and mutual respect for the dignity of others has taken its place and doesn't require gender roles in order to be beneficial to everyone involved.
