When you say made the FPS genere do you mean the first FPS game or it made FPS popular?

I think Doom made it popular! It was the first to do death match properly, the hype around it was amazing back in the day, it got people to buy PC's powerful enough to to play it and games like that.Goldeneye is well regarded but it wasn't the first to do anything and also I think the original Half-life is more influential than Goldeneye.

I mean everyone I know would say Goldeneye of course it's all opinions at the end of the day. But to the 12 yearold kid who said CoD made the FPS genre needs a good slap across the face.
