A toxic community is the direct result of lying to, and ripping off your customers.

People complain about how toxic this community is. Yet they fail to realize this is simply the result of bungie's decisions. Think back to the last time you put hours of effort into this game and got nothing. You were frustrated right? You finally achieved something difficult and got... nothing. Hard mode King's Fall, finally beat Oryx and you get a 301 gun... What?! You spent hours running strikes in year 1 to get enough weapons parts for reforge rolls, to get that perfect perk set on your gun. Let's say it took over 100 rerolls at the gun smith. You love this gun and use it all the time in pve, it works just the way you like it. It perfectly matches your play style. Now it's useless in the Taken King raid and missions. You've put days worth of time into a game that could be great, only to see it devolve into microtransactions. This is after paying for DLC, which was really just cut content from vanilla destiny. You realize bungie is simply activi$ions bitch and is conditioning everyone to accept microtransactions, eventually leading to pay to win. This feeling you get is frustration, disappointment. The more often it happens, the more negative your feelings are about the game. This is simple psychology. Bungle specifically designed the game mechanics around psychological tendencies to get us to play more, like gambling addicts. The net result? Eventually everyone gets fed up, angry and disillusioned. I'm a day one customer and love what the game could be. It is incredibly frustrating watching bungie turn it into Farmville via microtransactions. So quit bitching about a toxic community. You'll join our ranks eventually. As we all know, the game is dying. These facts are simply the result of bungie's actions.

  • I started at the beta. It got me hooked. Finally, the game is released. The first thing I notice is the empty subclass spot on the character screen. Thought to myself "must be for the expasion". Thought nothing was wrong with that, honestly because I didnt know any better. PvP was fine at the day one. I could use an auto, scout or a hand cannon. It'll all depended on what you were good with. Didnt really matter what the "meta" was. You could simply just out play another player regardless of your gun. Obviously, thats not the case anymore. Im about $60 dollars in at this point. Then, while Im playing I see this thing called Grimoire and that I should visit bungie.net to find out more. Never did for like the first 3 months. Completed the Vanilla version of Destiny and was truly disappointed with its "campaign" or PvE "story". Felt extremely short. It lacked any real impact on me as a player, a gamer. Then it dawned on me that its all online and not even in the game itself. Thats the first time I had to go to another source to find about a game's story and the races and characters behind it. Its hard to envelop yourself in the world when you have to go to the internet on a computer to really get an understanding of whats what and why. After the first Raid was released, everything pretty much went into chaos. Hardcore Bungie fans being dissapointed. Nerfs, buffs. The imbalances. Luke Smith deliberately insulting the community (the whole throw money at the screen ordeal). Crota raid was, ehhh, to say the least. When House of wolves was released, Im $100 into this game. Both expansions and vanilla. Then TTK was announced and they lived up to their promises. But only after being demolished by an upset community. I bought the collectors edition because I wanted to show my fandom off in my room. You know, the book, the strange coin replica. It was cool knick knacks that i enjoyed. But yet still felt like I was being played but I played oblivious all the while. At this point I have every dlc and the base game and TTK collectors. Im at $180 into this game and of course I have the carlton emote so thats an extra $10 dollars I used on "silver". So thats $190. I think back and try to convince myself. Is everything I have now, add up to $190 game? No. It does not. Does the lead writer leaving mid production have to with any of this? Alot of bungies original staff also quitting mid production? Before it was released? and i mean vanilla destiny. Honestly. I wish I waited. I could of payed 60 for everything thats out now. It would of probably felt like an actual FULL game. I think back to when i first popped in Destiny and beat it and told myself "thats it?!" I remember deliberately blocking out that thought from my head as if lying to myself was going to make anything better. I know Im not the only one guilty of this. Simply, what im trying to say is that Bungie is NOT the same Bungie we all knew and loved and now they are bent over Activision's desk like a desperate secretary trying to get a raise and US (the community) the spouse to bungie beleive thats its still being loyal to us and not lying and -blam!-ing us over on the flip side. Maybe my expectations were too high, maybe I was used to a certain level of finess and quality from a company like bungie and Activision just capitalized on it and played all of us like a fiddle. Maybe Im dead worng or right. Who knows.

  • yeah, but nobody is forcing you to play. People like you continue to make this community, as you say, toxic. There are plenty of people who go on this forum (and the less toxic reddit forum) and truly enjoy this game and have mostyl positive vibes. Sure bungie has done a couple questionable moves and its frustrated people, but all in all its a great game. But then theres people like you, who look at bungie with a very skeptical eye and look for any opportunity they can to spread negativity around these forums like a cancer. You need to realize that its just a video game, if the game and the developers/publishers really bother you that much than you should just leave and let the people who actually enjoy the game enjoy it.

      • But didn't Activision say that the microtransactions would be simply there for extra cash toward the budget? I thought they still planned to sell DLCs, but the transactions wouldn't have anything to do with content. If the game ever did become pay-to-win, I probably would leave too. It'd take a lot to convince me otherwise.

            • Still come back to the forums to read this stuff. Still wondering if Bungie will ever live up to anything great. Played day one. Did everything. Still playing Fallout 4 and other games since they dropped. Have not logged in one time since a week or two after TTK dropped. I am not 12 and the complaints are legit and real. If you don't believe then you are blind. Not a fan-boy Not buying Bungie ever again

            • The gambling and the fact that microtransactions involve random drops has really made me disapointed. I have been defending this company and game for a long time but the eververse part really grinds my gears.

              • Except a smart person (so apparently, no one in this community) would move on to a new game when they realize that the product they bought was below their standards. This community constantly states it hates being ripped off, yet here everyone is, not moving on, and just bitching.

                  • The toxicity comes from a large group of outspoken people who constantly keep comparing what we got to what we COULD have gotten, or what we SHOULD have gotten. People are never going to be satisfied with Destiny because it's never going to match up to anything that they could possibly imagine it to be in their heads. I thought Destiny was going to be something more, and what I got was something promising. I'm not going to sit here and cry and whine and complain about Bungie "stealing" my money from my wallet or anything like that. I'm glad to have experienced Destiny for what it is, through all its highs and lows. I haven't, nor will I ever sugarcoat this game to my friends if they ever show interest in purchasing it. It's a fun game, and I enjoyed pouring hours of my life into it. It's far from perfect, and Lord knows there were a ton of low points in the game's still-going lifespan. People forget what fun in a video game is. Someone's going to reply to this and ask me several questions, all of which pertain to the monotonous grind of Destiny appearing fun to me because I'm a simple sheeple, or a cawadooty fanboy with a short attention span. But what made Destiny fun was everything I did along the way, all the good AND the bad. That's enjoyment, you won't know the good times unless you go through the bad ones. Otherwise, you take it all for granted. Mind you, this is all some profane sounding bullshit when I'm just talking about a game, but oh well.
tl; dr people will never be satisfied and I'm typing this on no sleep at 7:43 AM
Bungie had toxic forums well before Destiny existed, a lot of gaming forums aren't much better. As for playing and feeling rewarded, that's something you may need to work on yourself with. This game is not a job, the guns and loot you get should not feel like the only reason you log in
