Creative Process

So, I've been curious about this for a while now. What do you do for your creative process? What makes your mind tick?

  • Sadly I play Destiny mostly alone, and soloing gives me a lot of time for introspection. Plus it allows me to explore the world and lore at my own pace. For writing, I create multiple tulpa for my characters and/or lucid dream about them. I give them strong personalities and motives and sometimes even settings. They basically do the rest in my head and all I have to do is write down what's happening in a vivid and descriptive way. Yes, it's like cheating. This is harder to do with pre-existing characters though, since I can't really conceptualize their innermost conflicts. So for those I typically use day-to-day situations or project part of my identity or my friends into them. I try to incorporate my passion for physics and programming into my stories. I feel like it's a good way to get people interested in science and engineering. I love books and reading so I'm constantly looking for new words and concepts. I also love videogames and learned to do pixel-art. Typically I envision a scene or setting, draw it and polish it a bit, and then dream the rest. I think this is why I take a bit longer, because I need time to set things in motion and get the most consistent version - letting it sink in first is the key!

    • I'm a huge fan of movies and cinematic story telling. I always picture my stories in my head as they happen, like a movie or tv show. So I can never right in the 1st person, it's too challenging for me. I don't even dream in the first person. Where the stories come from? Good question. I guess I envision these action sequences and I write them down. Of course the entire story can't be action so you got insert slows parts and character development in there. I always start with a Character Sheet. I list the Age, Name, Height, I don't often go into the description of my character because then you can lose the audience. I give the character a name and a personality. It's up to the reader to insert either themselves for someone they enjoy watching into the role. The character looks different to every reader. After I've listed all my characters and have described/detailed them out I move into the story. What kind of story do I want to write? What's the General plot? For The House of the Broken Kell I wanted to write an action adventure in the style of some of my favorite games/movies. Indiana Jones and Uncharted. Great Treasure Hunter, and the game just inserted relics into the game and there's not too much lore on them giving me even more content I can work with and make up. Next I break up my story By Chapter and I create outlines. DANGER'S MY MIDDLE NAME -Venus, Fallen Ketch ---.Introduce Character (Talking about something with mysterious side character) ---.Set story tone (Show the audience characters personality) ---. Shay enters the ketch ---. Trying to find something ---. Dramatic moment (Ship falls apart?) Using this outline I keep myself on track on what I want to cover in my story/chapter. Now I just start writing using this outline as a basis or notes for what I need to cover and explain in the chapter.

      • For me personally, a lot of my best writing is done when I'm listening to music. In fact I probably spend more time rearranging playlists and buying songs to construct the basic framework of a story, than I do on the actual writing. I especially like listening to Shinedown, Foo Fighters, LinkinPark, Halestorm, and Breaking Benjamin. Of course, my taste of music changes from one day to the next. Another part of my creative process comes from playing Destiny and the BS I talk about with the members of my fireteam (FJFSOM656 and Paradox1055). Because my writing style focuses so heavily on dialogue, I usually will try to go through the conversations I wrote as if they were the real thing. So right now I just want to thank them for putting up with that while we're doing Nightfall, bounties, Crucible, etc. FYI. I was listening to Shinedown while writing this.

        • When ever I want to write I just open up my phones quick memo app and turn something on to play in the background.

          • I literally look through the projects I need to do, pick one, read a bit to catch up, start a new post and write until I get to a good stopping point. Almost everything I do comes up on the fly as I write but I do think about some things just to get the story in a particular direction

            • As some may know, Strength of the Pack is my outtake on my own fireteam. So: 50% is playing Destiny with my team. 25% is talking to my friends. 25% is random BS going through my mind.
