Which stat is most important in determining skill?

Cumulative KDR

507

Recent KDR (Last 7 days)

180

Recent KDR (last 30 days)

456

Game mode specific KD (which mode)

253

Win %

409

Combat rating

2353

Other (Please specify)

579

Edit: Combat rating is holding pretty steady as the clear winner of this poll. I've tried to argue with people that skill is determined by more than KD alone, and that if you're going to judge by KD then they should go by recent kd, instead of overall. I've argued that win % and combat rating are better indicators, but that didn't seem to go over well either. Some people say that trials and rumble kd are much better indicators, and they might be for that particular situation, but again I don't think it shows overall skill. What do guys think? My personal opinion is that these numbers show nothing when taken individually and it's better to look at the big picture. Edit: alot of people are asking what combat rating is, here is my understanding; Combat rating starts at a base value of 100 for everyone, if you play 'within expectations' it doesn't change much, but if you do better or worse than those expectations it will change alot. I think it takes the teams average combat rating, and which ever is higher is expected to win. I don't know if it accounts for individual kill/death in the same manner or not. If a team has a much higher rating than yours and you lose, you don't lose much, but if you win you gain alot. The opposite is also true, if your team is much higher and you win you don't gain much, but if you lose than your rating is dropped alot. I don't know how much more goes into it, someone else can correct me if I'm wrong.

  • I play for bounties, missions, and just fun for the most part when I play crucible. So my stats forever suffer. Bad weapons, I'm usually solo. But when I decide to turn it on I feel I have no issue at all competing with people 2 kd and higher. I think stats are usually full of shit. Cases like me where my stats are way under what I could be. And the other people that play on full teams, camp their kd, disconnect, yet struggle to win a straight up 1 on 1 gun fight. Just my two cents.

    • I dont think theres a definitive stat that stands alone. Truly skillful players will have good ratings across the board (no, im not one of them lol) but for me none of the stats can measure overall improvement and some of us have gotten better with time. Any of my stats make me look awful and i was, but recently ive been much better as ive played more crucible than ever before since shaxx started giving out bounties. However i still suck at elimination which ive been helping a mate with for his quests and so even my recent kdrs will not be any better.

All these are important depending on what game mode you are recruting them for. Bc on my newest character I have a 1.7 kd but a combat rating of 80 bc I mainly play rift right now and I only grab the spark of my teammates are failing me but mainly I just play support and try to clear out the enemy so my team can get the spark and then I push up so they can dunk it. This play style will net you a low combat rating but yet I would consider myself playing an important part on any rift team But on the other hand my old one has a kd of 1.3 and use to have a 140 cr back before rift when I would play control, rumble and tdm and be at the very top of the board mostly. So I guess since most think cr is most important Bungie should add a cr stat to each game mode

      • I'll say this. We got a guy off of the forums to play ToO and he ended up having like a 2.3 or something overall. We were thinking "hell yea this will be a cakewalk." Turns out, the guy sat all the way back with a sniper rifle, just camping. Didn't really do anything

        • I would say rumble K/D is a good example of how K/D does NOT determine skill. The game mode encourages you to force encounters and you are not penalized for deaths. For example, if I play agressivly and force 30 encounters, and I win 2/3s of them, I will get 20 kills with a 2.0 K/D. This may win me the match. But if I play conservatively, and only force 20 encounters, and win 3/4 of them, I will get 15 kills with a K/D of 3.0. In this case, and many others, the guy with the LOWER K/D is acually the superior player.

          • I think skill is determined different from player to player. With that being said there's no one measurement that can determine skill alone. There's a load of solo pvpers that if they stayed partied up their stats would look totally different. And the same goes for people who stay partied up. They might appear "average" solo. Then, you have the players who when they first start, use that 1st character as a test. A means to get good. That player could take all that knowledge gained from practice and apply it to character 2 and 3. But still end up with an average kd because of how much time was spent practicing on character 1. What I'm trying to say is you really can't judge using the general methods. You'd have to first know a little bit about the player to eliminate plenty of variables that are not generally taken into account.

          • Regardless of how high your KD is. The closer your assists are to your kill count says a lot.

Well, with the recent bugs, (Unlimited Arrows + Hammers) it's safe to say you can't trust long term K/D anymore.

The call of duty series provides stats for kd and kpm (kills per minute). With that combination, you could determine who's got skills in any pvp

                        • I feel k/d is a pretty good measure in most cases. While there are exceptions there is a reason why most top level players carry a k/d above 2.0.

                          • Would be nice if rumble kd determines skill more than overall kd since my rumble kd is highest of all game types. But then again I think rumble is the easiest get a relatively high kd
