Holiday Festival Controversy

I was on the forums today and saw two posts specifically about holiday festivals in the Tower. There were two posts that generated quite a bit of controversy, one that called for a Christmas Festival and one that called for a Ramadan Festival. After reading these posts I couldn't believe how hypocritical and backwards some people on the forums are. Most accept a Christmas festival but are absolutely offended by the mere thought of a Ramadan Festival. Have we really fallen so far? Posting inappropriate phrases to bash the Islamic faith and making jokes about terrorism. It really is a shame. Don't give me the cop out excuses of that Christmas is more commercialized and makes up the majority, those explanations are complete crap, not everyone wants to celebrate a holiday with Christian roots. I for one don't even think that Destiny has any of the faiths we have presently. They praise the Traveler as their Savior and the Speaker is sort of the Pope to the people in a sense. I don't Christmas exists. I do, however, think that having a seasonal festival of some sort would be great TL;DR What justifiable reason can you give me for such a huge difference in opinion? PS- for those that agree what do you think would be a good idea for a festival during the holiday season?

  • How about instead we have in game lore holidays, such as day the traveler arrived, anniversary of the wall completion, or happy blink day?

    • There should be no Christmas or Ramadan celebration in the tower. There should be winter theme and xur should be giving "gifts" that is all. Leave everything related to religion out of it. Because religion is nothing but a poisonous divider amongst fellow human beings.

    • Since we can't let anybody be offended, just cover the tower in snow and call it Festival of the Traveler.

      • It's kind of bad, isn't it? How one celebration is okay but another isn't. Personally I'm a little bored of Christmas. I would much rather have a holiday that's tied to another culture because the holidays are generally about family and friends and all those good things. Though in the end I want a simple winter celebration. No specific holidays, no icons, just something like celebrating the winter solstice. It would settle this holiday debate and fits in with Destiny lore 100% better than any holiday people celebrate now.

      • Why not just make up a holiday/festival for the game? I could definitely see a New Years themed festival. But here's another thing to look at, bungie is centered in the U.S., specifically in Seattle. Also, why would they put in a Muslim themed holiday in a game that has no religious background? There will not be a Christmas themed festival.

        • I hate political correctness. It has stifled speech. I am an atheist, so I do not care about religions. I say celebrate them all. If they over lap have a special event on the overlapping days. Don't call it winter or holiday festival. Call all the holidays by name.

          • Just have a holidays festival, decorate the whole tower with lights and snow and festive things, and don't make it favor one religion or holiday

            • I'd prefer to just have a holiday festival. With as large a population base that destiny has its far to diverse to cater to any specific religion. Also Christmas roots are in pagan religion not based in Christianity. They merely adopted Christmas and Easter to help convert pagans to Christianity, I mean what's a fat man in a suit who uses magic and an Easter bunny have to do with Christianity.

                • People are completely missing the point. This isn't a post that is about Islam v. Christianity it's supposed to be about the extreme difference in reactions to two posts. I don't support any religious festivals in Destiny nor do I believe that it would fit the lore of the game, I just thought it was sad that people could have such extreme prejudice.

                •
Most accept a Christmas festival but are absolutely offended by the mere thought of a Ramadan Festival.
The fact is Christmas can be celebrate with zero reference to the Christian religion, excluding the very name which can be easily replaced by Happy Holidays. For a Christmas/Happy Holiday celebration, Bungie could put up blinking lights, put a giant Christmas tree in the tower, dress up the cryptarhk as the grinch, have Cayed dressed up as Santa, and give a quest that gives a couple hundred free silver (Gift from Bungie) etc. All of those things have absolutely nothing to do with the birth of Jesus or the Christian religion. On the other hand Ramadan is 100% religious. Participating in Ramadan is one of the key pillars and an actual religious requirement for the Islamic faith. "It is a time of self examination and increased religious devotion." Anybody can participate in Christmas festivities without acknowledging the Christian themes or history, but the same is not true for Ramadan.

                    • I don't care. Ramadan, sure. Hanukkah, bring it on! Diwali, who doesn't like candles? I'm not religious and don't celebrate Christmas as a religious period, but if others want their religion's holiday represented why should it be an issue? There's only one reason I can see it would be, plain old intolerance. Wake up people, not everyone believes what you do and that's OK.

                    • It's unfortunate that ppl don't take the time to understand Islam and take it as a terrorist religion when to honest terrorist extremist branches exist in all religions Christianity, Judaism, and Islam The root words that make up the Islam in Arabic literally mean "to submit" ... To the will of allah (God)

                    • Snow in the tower! And allow trading gifts(weapons, armor, other items) keep it seasonal or add all religious holidays.. Each section can be themed or implement them all in each area.

I am a Christian, however I do not feel that a Christmas event meshes with the lore. Likewise, I do not believe that any other existing holy day(s) would work. If they implement a seasonal event, it should work within the lore. Perhaps a Festival of Life or Rebirth? Instead of looking to have an event for your religion or my religion, why not seek to be inclusive? Why not express our generosity, kindness, and desire to unify peacefully instead of making it just about one holiday over the other? Edit: I'm glad that you personally feel the same way as I do, and am sad that many other individuals want it to be all about them.

Fyi, just about every current modern religion has stolen/incorporated from "fringe" or "dead" religions to make up their traditions. Many differing religions, whose members oppose or even hate the other, share traditional origins.

                      • Because 98% of Destiny players don't celebrate, or even know what Ramadan is. Christmas is completely another thing. If you can't take that and get offended by the horrible 'injustice' I think you should stop playing videogames altogether

                      • I think a festival would be nice, one in which we celebrate the season. They would have to tie it in with the game and as far as how they'll do it, I don't know.
