Holiday Festival Controversy

I was on the forums today and saw two posts specifically about holiday festivals in the Tower. There were two posts that generated quite a bit of controversy, one that called for a Christmas Festival and one that called for a Ramadan Festival. After reading these posts I couldn't believe how hypocritical and backwards some people on the forums are. Most accept a Christmas festival but are absolutely offended by the mere thought of a Ramadan Festival. Have we really fallen so far? Posting inappropriate phrases to bash the Islamic faith and making jokes about terrorism. It really is a shame. Don't give me the cop out excuses of that Christmas is more commercialized and makes up the majority, those explanations are complete crap, not everyone wants to celebrate a holiday with Christian roots. I for one don't even think that Destiny has any of the faiths we have presently. They praise the Traveler as their Savior and the Speaker is sort of the Pope to the people in a sense. I don't Christmas exists. I do, however, think that having a seasonal festival of some sort would be great TL;DR What justifiable reason can you give me for such a huge difference in opinion? PS- for those that agree what do you think would be a good idea for a festival during the holiday season?

  • Just call it "Traveler's Light" festival We'd be celebrating the traveler coming to us in our time of need and shielding us from the darkness.

Christmas does not have Christian roots, Jesus was not even born on Christmas day, if you study history you would see that Christmas is based on the Germanic pagan holiday "Yule" or "Yule Tide " to ease the transition of pagans to Christianity from the area in which it originates, In Some cases Yule Tide still makes it's way into statements for Christmas E.G. the Christmas carol "Deck The Halls" Yule was celebrated by bringing a pine tree into the house or town hall, decorating it, singing songs, drinking beer, remembering lost loved ones, and sacrificing then eating a Yule boar. Finally the children would put boots filled with straw outside for Odin's horse Slepnir while the god was on the "Wild Hunt" in hopes he would pass by, in exchange Odin would fill the boots with toys. Christmas is originaly celebrated by bringing a pine tree into the house, decorating it, singing songs, drinking egg nogg, remembering Jesus and eating a Christmas ham, finally children would hang stockings over the fire place to dry and hope that Saint Nicholas would deem them as good children and fill the stocking with toys, or if they were bad he would fill it with coal, see the similarities? Finally, all of the older images of Saint Nick depict him as a tall thin man with a long beard wearing robes and a pointy hat, carrying a staff, and riding a horse, almost the exact image of Odin when he is disguised as "the grey wanderer", Coca-Cola would reinvent the character into the jolly fat man we know today for marketing purposes, the sleigh and reindeer would replace the horse after "The Night Before Christmas" was written. TL;DR Christmas was originally Yule, a pagan holiday (Prepares self for hate)

I'm all for a festive "Traveler" holiday/non-religious. It's up to the individual on how they depict it as. Obviously Bungie understands the diversity in the community and they would not dare to put anything religiously affiliated in their game. You can still have a winter festival without it being "Christmas"

      • I think neither need to happen, why do I want to deal with the real world when I'm playing videogames? They just need to put festivals in while mirroring certain aspects of real holidays, but still only focus on the game world.

        • I mean bungie is located in America so they're more likely to celebrate mostly holidays celebrated in America. I know some people don't like it but that's what makes sense

I will give you a good reason Here in the U.S., everything from stores, restaurants, and public areas get festive during the holiday season. You will pretty much see a Christmas tree or wreath everywhere you go. Hell, even certain radio stations will play Christmas music 24/7 That being said, Bungie is an American company. If they added trees, lights, and snow in the tower, it'd be more like showing American culture. In no way should anybody be offended by the fact that most people in the U.S celebrate Christmas, christian or not And Bungie wouldn't be the first to do this either. Look at WoW, every December the game world is filled with presents, snow, reindeer, lights, and trees. Even Santa Claus comes by to give players presents if you give him cookies and milk. Is it offensive? No, it isn't. I commend Blizzard for doing it Now obviously Bungie shouldn't go calling it a Christmas celebration, but to celebrate the holiday season as a whole is something a vast majority of us really want. There's no reason for anybody to be butthurt about what is done in a video game anyway Edit: Canadians have alot of the same culture too, sorry to have forgotten you guys :)

            • I think it's because the majority of Destiny players live in North America and follow the Christian faith. Many people dislike the Idea of a Ramadan holiday due to all of what's happening in the Middle East. There are a very few Middle Eastern Destiny Players and the Muslims really don't have a very good standing with the rest of the world due to what they have done. Constantly trying to enforce Shariah Law and overall an Islamic Government across the world hasn't gone well with the other major religions. Not to say all Muslims are bad, but the fact that quite a few of them around the world are complete fanatics that it has caused many parts of the world to take a disliking to them.

                  • This wasnt called Halloween, it was festival of the lost. Christmas season doesn't have to called as such, call it festival of light with a winter theme. Both these holiday seasons have general themes that don't have to tie to religion, but the commercialized and sensationalized version of each. I'm not against Ramadan, but What would a Ramadan holiday look like? How would it be fun? The previous two work because of iconic themes that are not tied to religion, regardless if they started as such. Other games do these types of things often.

                    • You have to realize that most of the people who post on the forums are ignorant kids. They either think they are funny, or clever. They have no real view of the world yet, and don't realize how things may offend or hurt others. Maybe one day that will change, but so far it's not looking likely. Just another reason why a lot of the world has a negative view of Americans. It's also magnified by the anonymity of the Internet.

                      • Ppl have to understand that Halloween is one of the few none religious holidays that we have, anything to do with a holiday like Christmas or Ramadan can't and won't be represented in the game. A future holiday would be cool to see though, something maybe to do with the awoken or something.

                        • Festival of Winter: The House of Winter takes over every location for two weeks. Be careful about the 'snow' you find everywhere; it's actually crystallized Ether. Draksis Clause visits the Tower and gives presents to all the nasty little Guardians who betrayed the Traveler this year; good Guardians get a Black Engram. A special Public Event has Draksis Clause drop from the sky in his magical Skiff and fight you alongside Randolph the Red-Nosed Vandal. Win and he lets you loot his sack of presents. Lose and he puts you in his sack to deliver to good Majors and Ultras.

                          • I don't think other religions are bad but Bungie would not do anything but core American holidays because Bungie is based in Seattle and a large part of their player base is American so they do not really know about the holiday.
