I would like to know how this is being looked at, especially in regards to other material stores, because there does seem to be a huge difference in the weapon part "demand" across the playerbase. Let me explain(I actually do have the time):
Seeing as how there are several threads started regularly regarding the need for more weapon parts and that there are usually multiple replies within those threads claiming that the poster doesn't understand why the OP needs more, I'd say it is safe to say that there truly is a wide variance in either the supply or demand of weapon parts between players. I don't presume to know the cause of this, just that the difference does exist. Perhaps it is resulting from a difference in playstyle, how players upgrade/replace gear, or maybe in preferred activities and the drop rates for each one. Who knows? Well that is kind of my question: who knows? I would assume that Bungie should know the statistics for their own drop rates and activities played. And they should know the gear progressions built into their own game well enough. So I want to know what they say about the difference, not just confirm it exists, by try to figure out why is does.
I look at it this way: If they don't want to add another way to get weapon parts for fear of opening up an easy way to boost faction rep, then maybe try and look at the "why" of the problems and see if there is a way to balance the needs. Or maybe more simply, allow more material conversion. If it is faction rep that is holding back the weapon parts, then allow us to covert between armor and weapon parts since they are both available for faction rep.
