They made the medallions to encourage people to stay in games instead of leaving when they feel like there's a good chance they'll lose. And it makes playing the event that much less stressful when even if you lose, there's still a chance to turn it into a a sort of win. I actually think a redeemed medallion is worth 80% of a win's XP/iron banner standing. You don't need them to purchase things but they say you should wait for drops this time around anyway. If you [i]do[/i] want to buy them however, you need leg marks and the required iron banner rep. I read that comment about your system messing up your disks and that sucks, hope this clarifies
