Day before the reset, already had the Oryx checkpoint from earlier, and decided to give it another go after 2 previous failed attempts. This afternoon I was with a group and we got so close - just a sliver of health left, but I had to leave for work stuff. I come back on and see that group eventually finished it. Good for them, they worked for an hour and half when I was them.
Decided to give it one last go - and with this fourth group (who all knew what they were doing, three brought Black Spindles, and I think there were two TOM, only 2 people had not finished it before, I believe) we took down Oryx on the first try. There were only two people at 300+, the rest were 295+. And we had enough DPS to stagger Oryx with one man down, and enough to defeat the Echo with one man down (only 2 deaths in that last run).
I was so excited I forgot to watch Oryx die. And with 20 mouldering shards in my inventory, Oryx gave me: a (300) mark, a (310) hand cannon, and 2 mouldering shards.
The rewards weren't super exciting (2 mouldering shards, really??), but it was fun to have finally beaten him. I now understand why some people do all those requirements for folks that join them - why waste two hours on an Oryx checkpoint that only really needs 15 minutes.
Now back to the grind.
