That would actually work, you have "reasonably" stopped the threat. Couple of rifle butts to the head is ok, your just keeping them consious from blood loss.

Exactly, he is incapacitated in such a way he can no longer harm you or your family or property and can receive justice from the system once the leg has healed

Depends entirely on circumstances and intent. Where I live, if someone is trespassing with intent to harm, or if the threat is tipped out of favor of the defense (say there were more than one person breaking in, and you were alone) it is within legal right for self defense to pull that trigger. Just be damn sure before you do.
