Correct me if I'm wrong but you can still do strikes, you can still do story missions, you can still do patrol, you can still do raids and crucible, plus bounties etc. I fail to see what's been taken away. Obviously you can't do the nightfall and heroic and all that, but that makes sense. I'm getting the impression that people are mad because they can't reach the max level/light level without purchasing TTK... People need to remember that The Taken King is the start of year two, this isn't The Dark Below or House of Wolves.
