More accurately they are a good/product which the suppliers are pushing to be a service.
As consumers we have many choices available which can include "giving up" gaming...
Or finding/developing alternatives where the consumer demand-end defines what how and why they want whatever it is.

It's not just gaming. It's damn near every digitally available medium. You don't own shit. You are just paying for a license to temporarily access stuff.
