Let me start off by saying that so far, The Taken King is exceptional. I have very few complaints about it. Locking players out of content is wrong. They shouldn't do it, calling Destiny an expensive demo without TTK is humorously accurate. But it would be increasingly complicated to allow people who didn't buy the DLC to still do Dailes, Nightfalls etc. without getting content they didn't pay for. This increasingly complicated situation would get increasingly more complicated going forward. For example, what would be the purpose of letting players get to level 40 if they don't do any content that doesn't require them to be level 40? If they had a separate playlist for non DLC buyers, this would be fine for the first DLC. But what about the next one? Or the next ones? I'm all for equality between DLC buyers and non DLC buyers, but we're reiterating a problem and no possible solutions. We can't be angry at Bungie for not coming up with a solution if we can't come up with one ourselves.

  • I have been suggesting the simplest solution since the TDB days... Separate playlists for the various levels of DLC ownership are quite easy to do and the hardest part was the code that checks whether you have the required DLC and it already exists, its used to direct you to the buy page when you try to access an activity if you don't have the required dlc for. That code can be used to serve alternate playlists with minimal code overhead. Respecting the players access to the old content. That is much better than gimping older content to force people to upgrade (its more likely to drive people away entirely)

  • Solution, why did Bungie not put TTK on a disk or DLC and force a higher price for the 2 DLC and TTK. Wouldn't have been an argument in the first place, but we all know why unless it's coded that way, if so, oops Bungie! year ones need compensation.

  • I've already mentioned a few time that they shoul have level tiers like they did before the patch. For example a level 34 nightfall and a level 40 nightfall.

it wouldnt be that complicated for the nightfalls. Destiny 2 will probably be out next year so it wouldnt continue to complicate anything. having the old nightfall playlist (with year one weapon drops) next to the current one doesn't seem all that complicated. Even letting people with TTK get two drops wouldnt affect the game as much as year 1 weapons are mostly obsolete for year 2 activities. just my thoughts.

  • Destiny 2? Does that also have a ten year plan?

@Phil 421 put up a cool idea of a level 34 strike playlist that drops non-ascending year one endgame gear as rewards. I think putting enemies at level 35-36 would provide a decent endgame challenge in lieu of not having a NF or Weekly anymore. It keeps TTK for those with, but leaves a meaningful challenge for those without.
