Anyone notice that we are still on the LIGHT LEVEL system?

Let me get one thing out of the way. I liked the light level system. I didn't like that they made it dependent on certain pieces of gear. I thought they were going in the right direction with etheric light. The 2.0 system is a different way to go about it. I like that it's more flexible than pre-HOW (but not as flexible as post) but one thing is for sure, they did not do away with the underlying essence of the light level system. They just rewrapped it. Yes you gain levels by killing enemies, but you gain those levels to get to armor that increases your light (and thus your power). So instead of giving us all the advantages of gaining a light level in one fell swoop, they divided it up between the regular level and light stats. Basically they just added another step. Pre-2.0: you needed a certain amount of light (imbued in your armor) to gain levels (and thus gain the strength that came with gaining a level). Now, you gain levels, but you still need a certain amount of light to gain the power that your new level will ALLOW you to get. So basically, you gain levels so that you can gain the armor that increases your light stats. Further evidence is that even missions now gage difficulty not on your level, but on how much light you have (basically your light level). This made me chuckle.

  • They went with the traditional "gear score" that all MMO's use. Makes sense.

    • Well you an still upgrade your armor with the new infusion system, but it will take a bit of grinding and transmogrification would be much easier

      • Yeah, we are still on it. However, we don't have this stairstep style of damage, where it's a flat bonus between each level. Now it's a slope, where each increase in light level (166,167,168) allows us to do a little more damage each increase. Much better, and allows light gains to mean something

I'm confused here. You don't approve of having to be a certain level for better gear? Light level is basically a sum of all your gear (power). You level up for better gear, which increases your power. It's a simple system. If anything, getting "stronger" should be easier and much less random.

          • The new light level system in TTK is better, it's a staircase build up like EVERY OTHER MMORPG lol

          • Only way that this will be helpful is if there is plenty of armor options to.give Max light and not just the raid armor. If its just raid armor that gives Max we are all looking the same again. There needs to be a whole slew of new armor from all factions and events that give Max light not just the raid gear.

            • They made individual points of light actually matter instead of being able to do 30% more damage from one new price of armor

              • Nah, it's now "gearscore" or "iLevel" from MMO's. Your base level will make you strong but the stats from your higher tiered gear will make you stronger. It gives a recommended item level for doing certain content but doesn't state that it can't be done. It just hobbled your damage reduction/output if it's below the recommended rating.

              • But now its a few % dmg from vendor to a raid drop. And not a 25-50% power gap

              • It's a bit more of a slope and less power spikes

              • Yeah, we are definitely still on the light system, but I feel that it's more refined now. A little more flexibility for users and gives more options. I think with the light range we are going to see a lot of different armor / weapon combinations.

              • Still the same thing. We're all gonna end up wearing the same armor for maximum light. There'll be very little variation in gear. At least it'll be reforgable so we don't all have the same perks. But we'll all look the same...

              • I like it. I find it better. Light is kinda like your average item level. The higher it is, the more powerful you are. But now it's not as easy to upgrade it. And you can upgrade it in more than just 2 ways. I think. Hopefully.

              • This is true, but it's just an easier way to view it or get your head around it. A big problem the previous system has was thresholds. You were either 33 or 34. Even if you were one Light point under 34, you had the power of a 33. Now it's more a gradual gradient. Sure, you'll have more effectiveness if you have 200 light at level 40 than if you have 200 light at level 20, but enemies that need 210 light won't be such a huge step above you, especially at later levels. In short, it's not an entirely bad system, just another thing we will have to adjust to.

              • I apparently missed the boat to get a new class item that was 180 but is all good. Next week I hope to be near max light level.

              • You're forgetting about infusion, and the fact that light level is effected by weapons, ghosts and class items now, not simply armor. We'll have to wait and see exactly how infusion works to gauge its total effect on the level system, but it seems likely that the light level system is going to be much more flexible than it has been for the past year.

              • How is it any different than before? I had to get my guardian to lvl 20 b4 I could get better armor. Than 26 to get better armor. Than 30... Etc? Basically nothing has changed. They just gave us a new lvl cap

              • I was thinking about this too.... I noticed that even being at level 33, changing the easy beginning bounty level to 34 indicated it as impossible due to my light level being too low.
