They were either new to the game around Christmas, or they deleted a character and replayed the story just for that.

Doubt it. I'm a beta player and I kept mine for this very reason. It was the final weapon given to you in the original story. I figured it would have relevance, and I think plenty of others that thought ahead were the same. (though to be fair, there were probably quite a few like you mentioned as well).
