To break from all the negativity surrounding the mishandling of TTK, I'd like to discuss something that's been on my mind for awhile. What're we, as guardians, fighting for?
There's so civilians or any rescue missions. We see a few maybe civilians in the Tower, but they have no agency as we just walk right through them as they walk their tiny patrol around the Tower. It never really feels like we're actually helping anyone.
Even the missions on the planets, given to us through impersonal comms and finished the same way. It was sorta teased in HoW where they mention the Prince and his Crows would be helping us, but they're nowhere to be seen.
Are we, as guardians, making the world safer? Do people appreciate us? Or maybe they see us as people often see PMCs, as some sort of selfish organization looking out just for number one?
Since the beginning I've felt that "the last protected city" should be an area we could walk around. Heck it could be updated each DLC to show us that we are making a difference. I think it would give a nice non loot based reward that everyone could look back on and say "We did this", more than some legendary or exotic sitting in the vault forever.
In short, I think that Destiny's world desperately needs to be more "alive" than just filled with monsters. But that's just my 2 cents. What do my fellow guardians think?
Edit #1: I just realized that alot of the things we've been talking about weren't an issue with Bungie's last game, Halo: Reach. There was wildlife, civilians, etc. You actually knew exactly what you were fighting for and the stakes. What happened?

Nothing its all a lie. Humanity has been wiped off the face of the Earth. Guardians are all re-animated corpses, with memories implanted by the Ghosts. They use their transmats to refresh the bodies, and then arm us and tell us that the Darkness is here and we must fight it. The truth is, the Fallen, and Cabal are now the Dominant species, the Hive and Vex are the new invaders. This is why they are always fighting each other. But we, we are the true aggressors, the only time they band together is when we arrive. Beware, the Traveler is Evil, the Ghosts are designed to reprogram us and hide the truth. The Exo Stranger and her comrades are the only true survivors. They will bring you out of the Tainted light, and back into the real world once again.

Great point. I've also been thinking similar thoughts, some of the best storytelling tools are the simplest ones. What if you randomly get a "Special delivery" at the postmaster, and it turned out to be a note from a family within the city. It says that because of your efforts patrolling the cosmodrome, they where finally able to make it to the city. At the bottom of the letter reads "thank you guardian" in a child's handwriting, it also has one bit of glimmer tapped to it. Sorry, just blazed a little rabbit trail there.

This is a great idea

I completely agree. Mass Effect did a great job of making you "hate" the reapers as it showed what they do to people, even to the extent of showing a child get gunned down. Hopefully the taken king will do better in this part because as it stands now, I just feel like a killing machine with little direction questioning if I'm good, bad, or just another faction. Also I would like more wild life on the planets as this would also help bring the world alive.

Take a glance in a mirror That's what you're fighting for
yourself
Unfortunately I don't think the game is designed for that type of thing. At this point we are stuck with this version of Destiny but maybe if we all harp on Bungie enough they will add this to Destiny 2! I wish this was in the game. It would actually make me care about the end game activities more then I do.

http://venturebeat.com/2015/09/04/ex-bungie-composer-marty-odonnell-wins-epic-legal-fight-with-former-bosses/ They're fighting for your money.

It'd be cool to watch the city not only feel more alive but watch it expand. With each year the city limits grow or your sent out to with a batch of guardians to wipe out an enemy outpost for a future forward operating base to clear the path to a second City.

we are nothing but the 'taken' equivalent of the traveler. we're merely its undead pawn. maybe someday we'll realize that light and darkness are but a matter of perspectives. our destiny is yet to be revealed.
-
Thats because of the poor storytelling. If you (like me) does not know etf is going on in the world we are in, its due the lack of story telling. It basicly goes like this: You kill badguys and save humanity. Done.

We are space N.A.Z.I following the commands of our hitler orb to eliminate all the impure races in the galaxy or "Darkness" if you will for we are the cleansing light that will burn away all those unworthy to live in our glorious second golden age or atleast thats what got from the story where we commit mass genocide with our only reason being just following orders

Seriously who are we defending? The birds In the tower? Why goto the other planets? There's nobody there to save. What's the point? They really did fuk up this game.

And it would open up a lot more opportunity for different quests regarding factions. You could work with groups like Dead Orbit, New Monarchy, and FWC to help improve certain areas of the town in order to recruit new members to the faction. It could be a collective thing too where at the end of the month you could see which faction had more of a following due to quests completed by everyone on the servers

you are fighting for these

Bump. I had a HUGE problem with this the first couple months the game came out. There's next to no life in the game. Even the AI is lackluster. They need more shit going on around the environments to make it come alive. Would love to see skirmishes between enemies in the distance. Maybe have Fallen patrol ships fly overhead every now and then. See Thrall scaling the walls in darker areas. Enemies invading other areas. Imagine if Cabal attempted an attack on Fallen in the giant Mothyards. Could lead to an epic battle. At this point, anything will do. Idk if Bungie has one of those teams that's sole job is to make the environments more lively, but they sure need one. Just once the main design of an area is done, give it to them to add elements of making it feel more immersive. Because this game needs it bad.

Here, I have an idea. How about public events in the tower. Your walking around. Maybe heading to the bounty tracker, then boom your in first person again. A fallen ketch appears and a they start attacking the city. Defend the city. Maybe they could have missions or quests like this as well. Drop your thoughts below. Maybe Ikora Ray could show off Her sweet moves.

Dude, theres evil out there that you would not believe. Evil so evil that it evils anothers evils evil with evil. What else do you need?

With any luck we'll have plenty of things to fight for in TTK. Lots of dialogue during missions. If nothing else, they'll make you care just about your brothers in arms, like Variks (I would hate to see him get hurt by the taken, We been bros since he said "Not all that are fallen are lost...") Zavala and Cayde-6. Looking forward to all of their involvements. Just based on watching the first mission in TTK. There was more dialogue in the first mission than the entire vanilla story line.

You're about a year late with that suggestion....I got to say tho, it's one of my all time favorites.
