I personally think that religion was created to enforce a sense of morality onto the general public, (Ill use Christian terms etc for this). Places like Heaven and Hell encouraged people to stand in the lines of a moral code, or else they would suffer eternal unrest in Hell. Hell would have discouraged people to steal, rob, and Heaven would encourage people to be good citizens. Jesus's teachings/miracles/act of wonders etc. were to 'capture' the audience, and the stories would have been morphed over time, so then it was thought to be hardcore fact. But that is my opinion and beliefs when it comes to Religion :). Your beliefs and opinions may vary. Edit: Encourage was encouraged. Whoops.

  • That's true for a lot of religions. But, this is exactly why Christianity is so unique. According to the bible, living a moral life is good, but it has no bearing on your standing with God and your eternal resting place. God expects perfection. A person with even one sin is just as guilty as the person with a myriad of sin. God is just and he must punish sin. Everyone has sinned so everyone is headed to hell. God has no obligation to save us, we've chosen to sin so our punishment is just. However, God is also loving and he created us to fellowship with us and he wants us to choose to love him. So, in his love, he took on the form of a man and lived the perfect life that we couldn't do. He then took on all of our sin and the just punishment for that sin and offers his perfect righteousness to us, if we but trust that he did it. This is why Christianity stands out from the rest. Every other religion has some form of earning involved. We as humans are drawn to that. Our pride makes us want to earn things so we can be exalted. We don't like to hear that we can't do something, but that's exactly what Christianity says. We cannot be perfect, so our loving God says he'll do it for us and even though we deserve death, he offers us life through no merit of our own.

  • If God created us he would not have been looking for perfection. Since in Christianity god is all knowing and enternal than in creating adam and eve god knew full well that eve would end up plucking the forbidden fruit. Thus beginning sin, death, decay, etc. We are born to find our own way, we may not know the way but god knows. If he wanted us to be perfect he would have made us perfect with no way to stray from it. But he didnt. And what is so great about perfection? If everyone and everything was absolutely perfect there would be no point in life, in existence. How would you know what good is without bad? How would you love without also knowing hate? How could one see light without dark? God created the universe to observe imperfection, which much more beautiful than perfection.

  • You're missing the point, God never expected us to be perfect. But because he is perfectly just, he cannot let sin go unpunished. So either you pay for your sin or you thank God for making the payment for you. The bible says that Jesus dying for our sin was planned before the creation.

I dont necesarily believe god will punish those who sin, and I don't believe in heaven or hell. I believe in karma, you commit a sin, soon you will meet consequences of that sin throughout your life. Consequences can also transfer to your souls next life. Let's say in one life, a person treats others with special needs badly, the karmic resolution in the souls next life would be to live as a person with special needs themselves and learn what it is they mocked. Personally, god created us with an interal ability to pass judgment on our actions, and that is karma. Lemme know what you think

  • Well that's like I said. Most, if not all other religions have some degree of earning.

  • So, either worship God or burn in hell? I know there must be a better explanation but that's all I'm really getting from what you're saying.

  • That's what it boils down to. It's a just punishment for sin. But, God has given everyone a chance to have all of their sin forgiven.

  • You can also worship God and commit sin. What is the rectification for sin that you're talking about?

  • Yes you can, but you can't reside eternally in his presence without your sin being punished.

  • Wouldn't that in turn be the ultimate version of earning? Worship God and take the punishment of your sins for the reward of his eternal presence

  • The punishment is eternal. And like I've said. You cannot earn your way to heaven in Christian theology.

  • So no one can reside with him because everyone commits a sin. Even the most microscopic sin will mean eternal punishment. What would be the point in worshipping god if everyones end means eternal damnation?

  • He came into his creation, lived a sinless life and then died as to take the punishment we deserve and if we trust that he did that he will impart to us his perfection.
