most atheists I know became atheists through researching various sciences, religions, and listening to the opinions of experts in their fields. I've never heard anyone "claim intellectual superiority" for being an atheist, what you may be referring to here is the frustration that many atheists succumb to while debating against straw men, circular reasoning and skewed or miss interpreted facts. also I'm pretty sure that most people who don't believe in God don't believe in him/her/it because of what it says in the bible because of what they "read study and understand"
