Your Argument is INVALID... (Making Year 1 Legendary Weapons and Armor Obsolete)

They made the entire first year of this game completely pointless and a giant waste of time. You spent how many hours playing to get Legendary/Raid Weapons and Armor? You spent how many hours getting Etheric Light to ascend gear? You spent how many hours farming resource nodes in patrols? GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND!!! Destiny was nothing but a Grind. This is how they justified their lack of content. This is the excuse people who defended the game would use when people said the game was boring and lacked content. They needed a way to keep YOU and ME engaged with the game past the fail story missions, so what did they do? They made it a "Loot Driven Game" with RNG designed so that players WANT to spend hours and hours going back and redoing the SAME ACTIVITIES over and over and over and over again for the SOLE PURPOSE of acquiring enough Vanguard/Crucible Marks to get those Legendary Weapons and Armor from the vendors. For the SOLE PURPOSE of going through and beating the Vault of Glass and Crota's End to get that Raid Only stuff. And why? Why did people do this? Because the vast majority believed what they were told. Believed that it wasn't a waste of time. The Dark Below was a precursor to this, and many quit the game as a result when they tried doing it then as well. It should be no surprise that people would be pissed off, because they already attempted this and everyone had the exact same reaction to it before. That's why they introduced Etheric Light in House of Wolves, and that is the main primary reason for many who decided to come back to Destiny. But its just a huge slap to the face, though. Regardless. Because even after they give us Etheric Light, which became the center focus of HoW for the Prison of Elders? They now suddenly decide that they're going to take that away and no longer continue doing it going forward. Really? And they don't expect people to be pissed off or rather they are confused that there is such strong negativity towards all of it? Basically, TTK is entirely a different game from what we got. The video above details this perfectly. Year 1 just never happened. Bungie is just sweeping that shit under the rug. Which is fine, that's whatever. I agree, the first year of Destiny was a piece of garbage and should be burned and pissed on. But what about all of us morons who spent $100+ on it? What do WE get out of all that? They -blam!-ed up, they made all these mistakes and had all these problems with the game. So why do WE have to suffer for it? Why do WE get screwed over because of it? TTK would not have even been if not for us who paid into the franchise already, and yet nothing is really being done for us. We're being disrespected in the most assholish way possible by Bungie/Activision. That Year 1 Triumphs thing isn't worth shit. An Emblem? Don't care. A black Shader and Sparrow? What good are those? Those are cosmetic items that generally ALWAYS get replaced by something else. Prime example, I have the God of War shader which I love, why would I replace that? For some vain attempt to try and garner respect from total strangers new to the game? No, that's silly. I want continued ascension. This shouldn't even be up for debate. You put Etheric Light in and people were still grinding and getting the new weapons and armor for both Dark Below and House of Wolves DESPITE having the ability to further upgrade their old shit. SO QUITE CLEARLY PEOPLE WILL STILL USE NEW WEAPONS AND ARMOR EVEN WITH BEING ABLE TO CONTINUE ASCENDING THEIR OLD SHIT. We ALSO see PROOF that you can in fact add to the replay value of activities by using Gear Ascension as a mechanic for such. People WILL spend hours taking on very difficult challenges to be able to do so. There is nothing at all wrong with this and it obviously gives people more shit to do in the game. How is that a BAD thing? You can be excited for TTK all you want. The problem here is Bungie's decisions regarding Year 1 content and how they are basically eliminating any sense of true progression by not respecting the amount of time and effort invested in the game. Fact is, YES, this DOES actually matter and YES, this IS a big deal to MANY players who WILL be quitting the game because of this and only further destroy the game's reputation along with that of Bungie who clearly don't give two shits about player feedback like they claim that they do. You all remember this interview? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3DLTPQwB10 Fast forward to 4:27 where DeeJ talks about increasing Vault space because they acknowledge players want to be collectors and hold onto their stuff. That you can bring the Guardian you've created with you into Destiny 2 and going forward. Hate to tell you this, Bungie, BUT THAT INCLUDES OUR GEAR AS WELL! God -blam!-ing DAMMIT MAN! WHY DO YOU MAKE IT SO HARD FOR PEOPLE TO ENJOY THIS GAME!? SERIOUSLY! YOU ARE YOUR GREATEST OBSTACLE FOR DESTINY! You take one step forward and then two steps back. And it wasn't even YOU who announced this, instead we gotta find out from Game Informer? What the -blam!- is that all about? You ask us for our feedback, we give it to you and then what happens? We get Weekly Updates where YOU tell US how WE feel about things. You guys are putting out a shit ton of weapons. Good for you, here's a cookie. People are going to obviously go out and get that shit REGARDLESS of still being able to continue ascending all their old shit. The POINT is that it NEEDS TO BE A CHOICE THAT PLAYERS MAKE ON THEIR OWN NOT SOMETHING THAT IS DECIDED FOR THEM! Period. EDIT: As anyone can see looking through these comments, its a very divided subject. However, as I have pointed out to others? Continued Gear Ascension does not, in any way, shape or form hinder TTK or prevent players from getting and using the new stuff. Players will do so either way regardless. And when I ask people "would it really bother you if Year 1 weapons and armor could still ascend?" most generally don't respond to that or actually answer with "no, it wouldn't bother them" and of course it wouldn't. It wouldn't bother ANYONE because we ALREADY WENT THROUGH IT WITH HOUSE OF WOLVES. Etheric Light was done, its real, it happened. It didn't bother anyone, it didn't hurt the game in the least and a vast majority of players reacted quite positively to it. It won't hurt TTK. The only way it WILL hurt TTK is if you don't include it. Because people WILL leave. People WILL stop playing. You think that is silly? Screw you, that is YOUR opinion and obviously not how everyone else thinks. And THAT is the problem here, other people being arrogant and self-centered enough to think that they have a right to dictate how others should feel or think about something. That is WRONG, no matter how you look at it. YOU MUST RESPECT HOW OTHERS FEEL. There are many who have legitimate reasons for wanting to keep ascending their old stuff. It is THEIR RIGHT to feel that way. Deal with it. EDIT #2: For those asking, yes I have seen the IGN Interview with DeeJ. No, my opinion has not changed. It is insulting that Bungie's response to us about this is that "those weapons will always have a place for use in VOG" which is total bullshit. No one is going to keep and use the Fatebringer in Vault of Glass when there are other weapons that will have a higher damage value. More damage will always automatically mean making less stronger weapons obsolete by comparison. Old Legendary Weapons and Armor need to be able to continue ascending. That is how many of us feel, and that is not going to change. End of story.

I guess my biggest worry is that not enabling year 1 legendary progression any further could be a symptom of a lack of creativity on the development side... Namely, that instead of creating guns with more exciting perks that positively impact gameplay, it would be very easy for the developers to merely recreate preexisting guns with higher damage values that practically would require their usage for the endgame experience (e.g. +1 level raids / POE and Iron Banner / Crucible). We saw a little bit of this with House of Wolves, where instead of using any of the new HOW guns, most people upgraded old raid gear instead - mostly due to the fact that most of the HOW guns had perks specific to Fallen (e.g. the anti-shank rocket launchers). I just worry that, for example, I'll dismantle my Fatebringer, only to have the expansion have me grind out for a new gun that's effectively just a new Fatebringer with a different name. I think it's far more challenging - but rewarding - if the game incentivized us to use new guns naturally by making them inherently worth using via new perks and gun types. Also, somewhat unrelated, I thought it was cool how they were rotating drops out with each DLC release. Being a November starter, I played with a guy last week that had ascended a complete set of matching Hunter armor from vanilla Destiny that I had never seen before and don't have access to anymore. Anyway, I thought that was kind of a cool reward for him being able to show off that he was a day 1 guy and it'll be a shame that all those armor pieces and guns will essentially be thrown away and we'll only be left with that emblem to show that we were survivors of the year one growing pains.

Great post. I do feel they are trying redo this game, sweeping year one under the rug like you said. I'm glad to see new weapons with their unique look. Good on them. I am pissed I'm a day one player and still have not gotten fatebringer. I don't complete Vog anymore, it's a waste of time. Exotic chest never got an exotic from it. Vault space is still and will continue to be an issue, not sure why it's hard to have vault sorting. With each class or fraction with its own slot, for example all queens weapons, Vog weapons and armor..etc etc. They keep reinventing the wheel each new DLC, with the exception of exotics. Stick to one way of getting that new lvl. That's my two cents.

      • Not reading all the responses but this is spot on. Count me as one of those players who put in just under 1,000 hours and is walking away from the game. Glad I hadn't already spent the money for TTK. The loot we use should be OUR choice. Rather than letting us, the players, enjoy this game however we see fit, Bungie continues to feel the need to dictate to us how we should play the game. If they see the error of their ways and fix some of these issues, I will come back. Until then, they don't get anymore of my money or time.

          • I completely agree, and I WILL just quit Destiny all together, and never play another Bungie game again if this goes through. It feels like year one was a complete waste of time.

          • Bor-ing! Really? You couldn't have just done what most people have done when pointlessly complaining about this and sum it up in just a few sentences max? Come on I barely read half of it from about half way through, you spend so much time trying to make it all seem valid and like it's actually gonna get something done and yet it just ended up so long and convoluted that I just lost interest in what you had to say. I understand that you don't want to lose all your precious weapons you spent hours to obtain and lvl up, I know how you feel with that, I love my unfriendly giant and her courtesy but we need to let them go, they were great while they lasted but better things are on their way. It's not like our current guns are gonna be physically taken away, we can still use them, they just won't be as effective or powerful as the new guns. Finally is it really gonna be fun to go through whatever instalment of destiny we get to in about 5 years and we can still use vanilla guns? It takes away the value and fun if you can just ascend an old gun and keep going, it's what happens with HoW, there were some really cool new guns that were brought in but since we could just ascend our old guns most people just did that and used them, and there was no excitement or even use/call for the new guns. Hugs and kisses for those that need them, the rest of you though, I'll see you on the battlefield...wait no wrong words... I'll see you in the tower and orbit.

          • If you wanna use the same weapons for years upon years, play call of duty. My god I honestly don't care if we can ascend the shit from year one or not. Quit being boobs. I wanna go find new gear. That's the whole point isn't it? And guess what you can still use your gear for the old raids. Isn't that why it's called raid gear? Just like the POE armor has a perk that only works in the prison of elders. Get over yourselves.

Then don't buy it dude geez. You don't need it anyways, you haven't even mastered the current destiny. Get your Grimoir up, do some more stuff or something before you self proclaim yourself a veteran master of the game and its functions. I'm as bummed as the next guy about the irrelevance of my year one items but this post is so unnecessary and you spent way to much time fighting a losing battle.

              • I don't find it was a waste of time at all to be honest, because I got to share the up and downs of the game which has been mostly entertaining. I don't care about any of the weapons I have right now apart from Hardlight but the rest I'll probably delete if I have to.

I didn't read it all if you don't mind. But het over it In every rpg weapons don't grow with you. So now that happens here too. It's only logical. In borderlands In diablo Elder scrolles Etc etc etc If you level up you gonna need new weapons to keep up with you

                  • THEY HAVE TO MOVE ON. Weapons and armor become obselete in RPG/MMO's. It happens. Effin' get over it or jump on the hype train to another game (If you do, I would suggest Scalebound or Darksouls 3, but you won't 'cause you care too much about Destiny hence, this thread) TTK is year two and I believe everything should be fresh, which it is. Even Ghost is getting reworked dialogue and potentially better voice acting. I'm so sick of Fatebringer, Black Hammer, Vision of Confluence master races. You can keep your old legendary gear as souvenir's though. I have no problem moving foward, those new Hakke weapons look dope.

That's a long as post for this
Old Legendary Weapons and Armor need to be able to continue ascending. That is how many of us feel, and that is not going to change. End of story.
Actually I may come off as disrespectful but I genuinely want to say that I appreciate you saying that is how many people "feel". Simple thing is I understand why so many people want to keep old gear, hell I still have the supremacy from that Queen's Wrath event in week 3, and I love it. But here is the thing, This is an RPG, I know fancy guns and grenades make people get distracted from this and sometimes its hard to tell but it IS an RPG, and the simple fact is there is no RPG that lets you bring up beginner content to end-game, now there is transmogrification, and according to the gameinformer interview you will be able to change the looks of items by sacrificing other items in the same slot, so there's that. Also you are not being forced to dismantle your old gear, its still perfectly viable in crucible and in lower-end content, a lot of us with the stranger's rifle know exactly how this feels. And who knows maybe some day in the future they let us do something, but the simple thing is at the end of the day molds don't break so easily, and this is how RPGs work, and petitioning and acting spoiled and needy about it isn't going to change anything, its just going to make things worse.

                            • It's cool to have options on what gear we want to use. Remember when we ALL had the same exact Crota gear on for months? How boring was that? I loved the idea of being able to ascend my warlock VOG boots for example, because I just plain liked the way they look with the neon orange strap! Lol it's fun to have a choice on the items we equip. Every destiny player likes getting new gear. It doesn't hurt the game to also have the old stuff we've acquired along the way as another choice. The dark below weapons were very specific on the perks. Players don't want to swap weapons every time we come across a different type of enemy. THATS WHY players used the old weapons and gear. I won a scout, hand cannon, pulse rifle, and auto rifle from Skolas. The solar dregs pride was cool just because I didn't have any solar hand cannons but they were all a huge disappointment when it came to actually playing with them. People are pissed about not being able to ascend old weapons because they know it means more "Skolas" type gear to come. Who wants that? Only people who don't know any better.
