If you wore a Jackolyte and visited Xur that weekend he would let you have them. Sort of like a trick-or-treat. When you used them every time you respawn a swarm of bats would fly around you and disappear.

If you went to xur while wearing a jackolyte you could buy flight of shadows, it replaced your standard respawn with a swarm of bats for 24 hours
