I use DIM, and find it extremely useful. You can build loadouts, transfer items across characters, and even change equipped gear.
Drawback is that you must have at least one free slot of each type in vault to function properly. Also, you need to move all items of a specific type, you cannot choose how many - for example, if you have 13 heavy ammo synth, you need to move all of them.

That's one thing that I agree could be implemented! Sadly the free vault space is the same with the companion app, Destiny at the moment doesn't provie a way to directly swap weapons between characters without that 'middle man' :/
