The reason I don't use Scout Rifles is simply the TTK is far too low compared to other valid options such as Thorn, TLW or Red Death. It is also a very hard to use gun in the vast majority of Crucible/ToO maps considering that most are close quarters/mid range. A hand gun or pulse rifle are just the better primary weapon option for these situations and a hand gun can easily out damage a scout rifle.

  • If you get the first shot with a Scout Rifle at a reasonable distance, chances are that you'll win the gunfight and given the long range encounter they're ideal in, the first shot is not hard to come by and follow-up shots are easy, whereas they're much more difficult for the opponent to land. The options you gave were 3 Exotics. What happens if those Exotics are taken away? When it comes to use of Exotic vs Legendary, Hand Cannons and Pulse Rifles are predominantly Exotics, but as far as Legendary primary weapons go, I see more of them than I see of MIDA. As far as damage goes, 61 Impact SRs do 73 per headshot in PvP, meaning 3-shot headshot kills the same as all Legendary Hand Cannons excluding modifiers such as Final Round, with a higher RoF than the 81 and 94 Impact HCs, and more range on average than ALL of them. A Scout Rifle can be put to very effective use in PvP, they're just a lot less forgiving for missed shots in the CQC environment, but it isn't exactly a pipe dream to beat a Hand Cannon or Pulse Rifle.

  • My main issue with Scout Rifles is to your own point that they aren't forgiving in close to mid range combat. The majority of maps in Crucible are close quarters and it makes using a scout rifle impractical. My personal view of the scout rifle is that it's a situational gun and there are better options out there. Also while I listed exotics as my to-go guns there are plenty of legendary hand cannons or pulse rifles that out shine most scout rifles. Check out the Future War Cult hand cannon the Fulcrum or Ill Will which are both great guns to use in almost any situation in PvP.

  • Believe me when I say I love Hand Cannons (namely Jewel of Osiris at the moment), but when it comes to the optimal settings for a Hand Cannon encounter, you're being faced down by Thorn or The Last Word; with a Legendary, your chances of winning are slim to none if the opponent is even half-competent. As for Pulse Rifles, I only see the highest Impact tier or the less common Stranger's Rifle. These too can be rather unforgiving in CQC, as the slightest flinch mid-burst can throw your aim off and remove the opportunity for a 2-burst kill, whereas when firing a single bullet per trigger press, you have to be struck by repeated flinches i.e. High-Calibre Rounds for the engagement to be significantly affected.
