Seems to me that the only weapons that survived from the Golden Age are ones that were physically incapable of working and were infused with amazing space magic that allows the bullets to magically appear in the chamber and shoot without any physically possible combustion. The space magic would also explain how bullets from a half full magazine magically transfer into another magazine in the course of the 3 seconds it takes you to reload.
